What if, rather than finding Iris, we discover that "Iris" were the friendships we made along the way?

Okay okay, hear me out.

At the end of her journey, Iris decided to shatter her soul into millions of tiny little fragments, and each of those tiny fragments of her soul was reincarnated as an adventurer! The reason that you can save at the Iris stones - Iris' tear drops - is because we're spiritually a part of Iris herself.

This is why we'll never find Iris; because her physical form is already long gone.

But that's just a theory, A GAME- *gets shot*

    I am Iris. You are Iris. We all are Iris. 

    Are we an unconscious  hive mind then? Maybe this is why we keep coming back to this game after so many years because we were given a part of her soul that is calling out to the other shards other players were given and only together we can be one?...
