First I am sorry for the length of this post... I guess I am going through UWO withdrawal.
There have been a lot of talk about ships and how new players are at a disadvantage.
Let me get out my rocking chair and sit on the bow of my harbored ship, and remind everyone what life was like... like Grandpa walking 5 miles up hill, both ways to school and back, with in 3 feet up snow, and how he liked it.
It has been a few years now, you completed schools and all you got was a little money, a fancy coat or staff, and maybe a job change ticket. You had to make your own land maps. For a long time, I specialized as a pathfinder for friends and company mates, who could not find their way to dungeons. You had to buy your own ships and when you got a Sambuk or a Pinance it was a big deal. You actually had to learn some history as you solved adventure quests and looked for the right NPC to talk to. And if you wanted to grind production skills, you had to sit for a long time producing items one at a time.
Today, new players get upgraded ships, trunks of items and other things for every school they finish. If you do all 9, that is 9 ships they did not to pay a ducat for. The companies are always looking for active players and are more than happy to help anyone that wants to join. Experience players are even willing to go loads of Nanban goods, to help a noob jump multiple trade levels. It took me nearly 2 month, back in the beginning, to even make all levels 20 and even longer to grind skills to something usable, without the help of ivyro, bulk production and maps to everything. New players are not at that much of a disadvantage.
Oh yeah (rocking in my chair)... Remember when 2x XP or 2x Skill XP weekends were a big deal, instead of this every day bonus stuff. We used to see nearly everyone show up for all or part of those weekends.
But if you want to level the playing field, there have been some good ideas and I will give you a few more.
The 200M Investment tickets should go - replace it with an astro item that for 1 hour give an XP and Fame bonus... Maybe 1 XP/Fame Points per 100 ducats.
Stop having NPC sell items, players can produce - Reinvestment bonds, etc
Allow all ship parts to built in the game, but require things like EA Shipbuilding Permits or better yet, company production tickets and other reward items, for their production.
Create an astro item that increases the chances of rare drops.
Instead of Astro ships - make all ships either NPC or player builds
Have Special hulls that can be purchased with Astros, to give an extra upgrade or come with an automatic skill, or have to be used to make only a specific ship.
Have 3 purchasable astro items to reduce the level requirements for ANY ship, for example 1 ticket = (- 5) levels. Separate tickets to reduce Adventure, Trade and Maritime levels.
That would make shipbuilders, shipbuilders again and not just mod/refitters.
Then I posted this on the old forums, Farm upgrades, which would remove the need more so many multiple characters:
Add a plantation to the private farms - This would be like your quarters in your home cities. It would be upgradable. You could improve your plantation at any major city.
The plantation would have additional storage just like the quarters and you could add store items at any major city. Except there would be a limit on what you could remove, at a major city. Example: 1 removable item per category per Plantation Grade. That would increase with the grade of your plantation. So if your plantation was R1 you could remove 1 equipment, ship part, consumable, document or trade good. If your plantation was R3 then you could remove 3, at any major city.
The plantation would have an dock and just like the docks in the Caribbean, they could be increased with the use of astro items. But again, there would be a limit on the number of ships you could remove at a major city.
Once per day, you could reset your removable items. Just like once per day, we can do maintenance on the farms. But again, at the farm you can change everything.
Give a +1 to all skills used at the plantation/private farm or make an Astro Item that would increase skills at the farm up to +2.
The upside to this would be, less need for multiple characters to be mules, so you could limit them to a main and 1 alt, per player. Second, it would increase sea traffic to all the farms, which would also help the pirates and get people out of Seville.
Or if you wanted another compromise to multiple characters... Make it an astro item to have multiples or an astro item to allow your aides to carry items for you, Suggestion on Aide Storage Astro Items:
Astro Items enabling Aide storage ... 1) Active Aide Storage. 2) 7 or 30 day Aide Captain's Bag, 3) 7 or 30 day, Aide Strongbox. As Aide levels increase, so would their storage. But you could only access the Aide's storage, if they are your Aide Ship Captain.
There was a lot of talk about restoring looting by pirates. I was raided many times and lost multiple items. I would not be opposed to going back to that again, IF, there item lock on our stored items applied to plundering. Then if you get sacked by a pirate and you did not lock down your own stuff, its your own fault. Just like its your own fault for forgetting to switch your status to private when sailing hostile waters.
But the talk about removing the green flags so you can not get hit multiple times, is stupid. I was hit 4 times before the green flags between Manila and Jakarrat by the same rat. Actions like that caused the end of looting.

@FrozenRuby - what part of server reset don;t you understand. You will have a Barca and access to what ever your home waters are, you wont be able to get to the spice islands until you have the fame levels to get there. You';kll have no money other then what you can earn in local waters. No skills, no items to sell, nothing you will have to grind everything again.
I would like to eventually see from Papaya some more in-detail explanation as to why a server reset is technically necessary. I've always had a soft spot for the Uncharted Waters series and this game specifically. But I can't see myself playing in the same capacity as I used to if this wipe goes through, or putting the time and effort into grinding Shipbuilding all over again.
