level playing field- not so

I have seen posts stating that a server wipe will bring in lots of new players who will stay, play, and pay.
This is false on several fronts. First of all, most new
players leave because they are young people who have grown up getting
what they want when they want. When they realize that this game takes
years to get somewhere near endgame, they leave.
This game also
takes money if you want to be near the top. Many people leave after a
short while because they want to play a game in which they can be at the
top without paying.
Almost any MMO you see these days is nearly
dead within a couple of years of opening. This is because many people
become bored quite easily. They move from game to game; never playing
any game more than a few months.
The only reason UWO still exists is
because there are enough "old" people playing to keep it going. These
"old" people have what it takes to play a game like UWO. They have time,
money, and most importantly, patience.
If you steal all the time
and money these players have spent, many of them will leave. UWO can ill
afford to lose any paying players.
Some players that have been gone
for years have said they will come back. How wonderful! All the players
that were banned for misbehavior and the pirates who left because their
ability to grief others players was diminished will be back. (The
latter only if pirate "nerfs" are repealed).
I was playing before
the "nerfing" of pirates. One of the main reasons I quit playing was
because I was tired of the pirates interrupting my game and wasting my
time. The reason I started playing again was because pirates were
"nerfed".
If the server is wiped and these former players come back,
they will quickly dominate the server. I really doubt such a server
will be as noob friendly as GAMA was.
No matter how you look at it, a level playing field is impossible. Time
and money determine ones level in the game. The large disparity of both
between individual players guarantees a large disparity between
individual players in the game.

And no, I did not call myself a griefer or someone who misbehaves. If you read my post, I wrote those were the ones who will come back if there is a wipe and/or repeal of pirate "nerfs". I wrote that I came back to the game after pirates were "nerfed". Therefore, I am one who was playing and would not have to "come back".
I'm with Oberrill on every one of his points with the exception of the pirates who left over the DB and plunder nerfs. I think if they came back it would create more action on the seas and reinvigorate PVP in general which would be good for the game. It would create some challenges for Nanbanners and people who primarily do adventure, and I personally don't relish the thought of my adventuer toon and crafting toon getting items ganked by pirates. But you can't deny the fall-off in population it caused and the resultant dwindling of PVP in general. I do feel like there should be some kind of middle ground plunder to make it worth being a pirate but not so harsh that people lose such valuable or hard to replace items that they quit the game.
Back to the OP's original point. I agree 100% that a server wipe serves absolutely no purpose and will fix absolutely nothing other than making even more people quit.
Anyone interested can read my very detailed explanation a few posts down in this thread:
