The Person Behind The IGN

HelloAllHelloAll Posts: 701Member Intermediate
Hi all.

Somchai here.

I've been reading many of the post and comments over the past few days and thought i would add one of two of my own.

Now i keep hearing a lot about "for the good of the community", "to make the new ones feel welcome" or "to bring back the spirit of the good old days" .... Now i'm all for that. And although i'm fairly new to the game and maybe don't have great and knowledgeable input in world chat...i am active in world chat daily.

It would be nice for some of those campaigning for massive changes to be seen in world chat too, then we can all get to know each other a little better too.

But the point of this thread is to introduce myself and tell a little about myself and i hope that others will post on here and do the same.

About me:

My real name is Steven and i am 34 years old and live in Manchester in the UK.
I am self employed which allows me to be flexable with my working time. So sometimes you may see me online at different times per week, or maybe on some days i can be on for most of the day.7

Why UWO?:

I actually played this game about 7/8 years ago. Im not sure on the date but my friend started it when it was just released and quickly got me involved.
I did the school, i remember having to sail back and forth to collect those pigs for the advanced merch quest. I had no clue about po2's back then....and it was definitely more than 300 pigs for sure!
But i think at that time i was younger and ended up seeing a girl and got distracted and left the game.

However recently i remembered about the game and just made a new account to try it out and got hooked. What i love about it now is its honesty and choice of game play. In this era when i compare it to all the super violent games available this game is just such a refreshing change.

So my hope is the game continues to progress and that we are given reason to stick around.

I'd love to hear your story!!

We all want to attract new players.
What is needed is a way for them to really enjoy their first few hours of play.
In the beginning, it should be made easier to understand than it is now.
    Example,
In trade, a new player gets a big win by selling something.
In adventure, they gain an instant reward for finding a new town, and the town should be easier to find.
In maritime, they should be able to win their first battle, by having a coach ride with them.
Something like that would help to attract new players and keep them interested.

xxxxxxxx that doesnt really have anything to do with this post.

I started from fresh and understood the game by doing the schools and asking on school chat and world chat.

If you find it that hard then ask me for help in game.

But lets not change the focus of this thread.

Please all, lets hear about you :)

    Take it easy Somchai;

Knowing your IGN buddies is nice, we generally know our company members background and there it stops. but indeed you never know if it is you neighbor sailing along or someone living on the other end of the world.
I think it's a nice idea to see who's that pirate ruining my game [laughs] from time to time and who are my colleague traders out at sea ;)

    So Here I go:
My IGN main is FlorianGeyer; in RL my name is Nico and I am from Belgium. I used to play UWO for the first many years ago and then I came back after a looong break (unfortunatly I appeared to have lost everything due to the Netmarble OGP tranfer) I missed that transfer thing completely... Not a problem, a fresh start was fun. I used to accompany the Royal Navy company in London for as long as I play. I am somehow in between a regular and a veteran player since I know quit a lot but never try the more complicated things in the game. A lack of playtime (mostly periods of 2hrs/day) and a **fear of piracy mainly cause this... But I enjoy the game as somehow a local trader and beside as our comp website admin. To me the game is a moment of chill after a stressful day at work! :D

**fear of pirates: back in the days even North of Denmark (Oslo area) piracy was possible I didn't manage to survive that sea, time after time I got attacked and eventually I stopped playing.

    Be safe and prosper!

40 years old, from Northeastern USA.

Joined UWO when I first heard about its NA release in 2010. Played for a long time back then. Left the game until the OGP transfer and transferred my account over.

Came back to the game to see the worst of the worst of worst times in effect. My mid-level character was a total n00b by game standards and my once profitable trade runs were netting me 10% of the typical 1 hour dungeon crawls.

Spent a few more months in the game but was disheartened by the fact that I was no longer playing the game anymore and it felt more like "playing the system" and left.

Logged back in a few times for about a day or two here and there - long enough to see a bunch of AFK alts occupying all the open space at the markets in town and only seeing about 5 or 6 people actually on the chat channels vs. the 100+ or so that used to populate the school chat alone when I first played.

Left for good after realizing the game was a corpse of what it started as.

Coming back now in hopes that it has some revitalization and I can start playing it once again, but am over the heartbreak it caused. Would be nice if it came back to its glory days, but I'm still done with it if it doesn't.

34 yrs old, Ex-soldier for the american army, live in the Southeas of US, and i've played since beta, and since netmarble after beta as a pirate. I'm a pro nanbanner and dungeon runner, i have/had high level adv skills :D but i have to throw this in there. I'm very rich in-game and have 3 VERY high level chars with maxed out cargo ships for nanban, all 3 toons are min levels 60/78/62 so they can sail that GF.
But we need a wipe. considering i have every battle skill on pierat at or refined max, would be very hard to any new players even after 1 yr of playing to be able to survive a pirate attack from me. Nothing in the history of the game has been nerfed from previous experiences as hard as pirates, adv still get to do loads of adv with new disco's coming in with each new patch, traders still get to trade and get loads of new speed/cargo ships to buy/mod. But pvpers are just nerfed out.  Yes we get the most expensive of all new ships, yes we get the best new gear, and some of the best new consumables are for pvp, the forging tools like what 4 types out now?? atk, def, cannon, plate right?  but that stuff as of OGP was just for showing off standing in seville.  PvP needs a shot in the arm so to speak. If pvp isn't fixed it wont matter who plays, who comes in as new player, if wipe or no wipe, w/o pvp game (As i said 10000000 times during ogp AND IT CAME TRUE) will continue to die.

I am 38 years old, from Romania,i used to play a game that was very similar to UWO,it was called ”Discovery Online”,but after a year or so the same thing happent there like it happent here with UWO...they closed the game and never heard of him again.
And what can i say...after years of searching for a simmilar game i finnaly found this one,and as you can see, after 2 months of playing this one is down too.But i hope won t be forever.
As i was saying it was easy for me to play UWO as a new player because i had some exp from the other one. Many things the same, many missions, ships, clothes and many more. I recived some help from some of the oldest players in the game like Hylas,IrishPotato,MaximilionPegasus and some more and it was easy for me to catch up with others.
So...now i m waiting and i hope that the game will be back soon, and this time the developers will find some solutions to make him grow up again and bring as many players as possible in the game.

    sure why not.

32yo Software Developer from Venezuela, i'm an old time fan from the series since back in the super nintedo era, i started with NetMarble took a break once GPotato got involved and returned with OGP, my play time has been considerably reduced from what it once was because of RL getting in the way but always found the way to come back at least a few times a week

    Thanks a bunch.
I used to play the game a long time ago when it was Super Nintendo.
Tried to join the online game when it was released, but somehow my computer wouldn't accept the program, so it wasn't until about 6 months ago that I found the download, and rejoined the game.
My name is Mike, I am 72 years young, live in Monterey, California and sail for real.  Still ski in the winter and backpack with my kids and grandkids in the High Sierras in the Summer.
I love the game, but am not a fan of how much grinding it takes to level up.
I agree that except for the weekends, I don't see a lot of players playing., and that worries me about the long term viability of the game that I love and have only recently rediscovered.
Some of the ingame players that I met discouraged me from buying Astros, like it was a form of "cheating".  I understand that  feeling, but I want Papaya Play to make lots of money so that the game continues and I hope they do what ever is necessary to attract new players.
Please comment on what would make the game more fun for you, and more profitable for Papaya Play.
    Happy Sailing.

Hi, my IGN is Airhaun. In real life, people call me Aaron, I live about 50 miles outside of Los Angeles, California in the wonderful USA.  I discovered MMORPGs with Ultima Online back in 1998. The game was a giant sandbox which gave you the ability to build, create, grow and give a sense of accomplishment.

About 2 months ago I went 'googling' for something with a similar sandbox type gameplay and came across UWO and I'm loving it. To me it's like finding a hidden gem. Where has this game been all my life and why am I just now discovering it!? Haha! I have an adventurer toon and trade char. I've recently discovered making long trade runs from the Carribean to Northern Europe. I just obtained the port permit for the Indian Ocean and fit one trip to Calicut for pepper before the servers went down. While I love games (like Ultima Online) that are very complicated and intricate, that also means there is a lot to learn. My experience with other players has been a delight. You guys and the FMs have been kind, patient and helpful with in-game material support and answering my many questions. Particularly for me SkyFree, Sir-Duke and other's I'm forgetting. I also had my first pirate attack by Death Harbringer just prior to the servers going down. I think he took pity on me as a newbie, repaired my ship, compensated financially and gave me some advice on how to avoid. My next step is to join a company and get more involved in the community.

Papayaplay, for the sustainability of UWO it is my hope is this transfer is mutually beneficial for us players and you. I'm hoping UWO doesn't get dropped as I've just discovered it and can see myself participating for a long time. Anxiously waiting for any word on what the next step is.

World Chat is a really bad litmus test as it has become utterly toxic. It's become a running joke in our company that you can spend more time holding your breath than staying in world chat, you'll turn blue either way but one is less annoying.
