Premium content - what should they be?

KatanauwoKatanauwo Posts: 309Member Intermediate
Let's face that somebody must spend real money on something, or the game will not continue.

The question is, what things should be premium, and what should not?

While we make the wish list, we must also acknowledge that those premium content must give players a compelling reason to purchase them, or nobody would purchase them.

Compelling reason can be any of the following:
 - It is OP (P2W)
 - It is forced upon (Monthly subscription with otherwise limited access to game content)
 - It gives significant convenience / incentive (100% speed bonus, increased nanban rate)
 - It is a prestige outfit (Angel Wing, Steam Engineer Suit, Cat ear)
 - It gives special perks (piracy permit bypassing improved hold and 24 hour 1 hit rule)
 - It gives VIP ranks with better perks as the rank goes, which are given as the player achieves premium credit spending goal. The perks include such as daily cheque collection, permanent skill / exp / speed boost in addition to standard boost items.

You may disagree with any of those options, because they are merely ideas. But in the case of disagreeing, please recommend your idea on what should be premium content.

Please do not suggest nothing should be premium, or suggest to make something obscure premium (such as Sepcial QMP, which are now irrelevant).

Agreed, this needs to be a money making game for Papaya.
Reading some articles on how server companies make money, apparently only 3 to 5% of players opt to purchase premium items, and the great majority want to play for free.
So rather than having the future of the game depend on the "whales", can we come up with ideas to encourage even new players to purchase something?
Maybe when registering, there ought to be an option for setting up an account like PayPal.
Why wouldn't OGP accept PayPal?  If not PayPal, how about Amazon? Dang near everyone has an Amazon account.
Once a new player has success buying something they need, which in turn helps them in the game, they will be more likely to participate and purchase again. .

When OGP released ROG and the OP premium bottle, I could sense that they were going to run away.

I think the suggestion above has its merit. Let new players set up premium option on day one, probably like a big discount with first purchase, Tier 1 ship guaranteed on the first 10 lottery draw, while every item has 50% discount on first purchase.

What items do you suggest should be in premium store?

Beside players willing to pay smaller or larger amounts, there is always a large amount of players unable to pay (such as children, youth, ppl with limited financial abilities,...)

The art is to not make a game ruled by money, the majority of players who are not paying for it will quit playing and eventually the game will meet it's end because it was somehow bought out...
The art is to find a balance on how the use of money will create a (temporary) advantage to the investor, lend him some prestige or a fun boost without giving him an OP endless advantage to other nonpaying players.

To me there may be premium ships, but don't make them unbeatable in speed, strength and lvl reqs compared to the standard ships, maby they should only look different wit h some sort of founderscrest or whatever.

    You see my point?

temporary skill speed exp proffecency ect boosts
name change character looks changes make em pay big
make mall ships what they were ment to be,something to get you competative low - mid levels, not better then any in game upper tier left to sbers
above all nothing sold in mall that is made in game

The problem with cool looking stuff is that they are completely unnecessary in UWO.

Most of the time on sea, we sit in our own boat staring at our own stern. We occasionally enter central hub like Seville, where our focus are mainly on WTB and WTS channel or Company Admin search. We are too busy to focus on those fine details.

I am actually a collector of unique cool looking stuff. I had those Dynasty Kingdom costumes, some Papanese premium set, sheriff set, goddess dress, different kind of magic wand, different kind of pet, instruments, weapons. But none of them really matters in UWO.

In UWO we mainly look at ships, and the graphics is so outdated that some special look on the ship can excite us for no more than a day. In the end we focus a lot more on how big the cargo is, how big the damage figure is (we did not even look at the cannon shot graphics during pvp). It is the figures that mattered.

    What should UWO sell then?
Games like UWO with a secondary graphics should focus a lot more on premium convenience items or non-critical power stuff.

    E.g.
A premium shield which could make your ship have 1 dura if the critical hit would have cripple your ship. Like an extra life.

A noob with extra lives is still noob. A veteran with this extra life may win the battle but gets little honor. However the item may still be desired if a critical reinforcement action, e.g. a pirating attacking a friend. Limit the use of this shield by 3 times per battle for fairness.

    Or,
a temporary stimulus drug which makes your character not losing vigour when producing for one hour. It is extremely useful for alchemy especially when skill boost is in use (eating vigour food takes time).

    Or,
temporary battle boost which would double the effect of surgery or repair.

    Or,
Ship speed turbo charge in battle ring, boost the ship acceleration for 20 seconds by sacrificing the ability to firing cannons for the next 60 seconds. Useful for pirates or traders who want to engage or stay away from melee.

several different time-limited Secret No-War items (not just 1-day, but also include, say, 10-hour ones that cost, say 70% as much as a 1-day, and also a 1-hour one costing, say, 15% as much as a 1-day)

Beginner job-change cards (pay-for-convenience, as some veterans find school questlines boring) like back in OGP days which even some newbies can buy and use, as various beginner jobs have low level requirements each.

Special Quest Mediation Permits should be buffed and may be added later after, say 1-2 months after server opens as more people have enough levels for intermediate & advanced jobs, given the difficulties to pull their job-change quests for intermediate/advanced jobs.

A cash shop item that opens Oxford w/o level reqs which also allows new theses options at any scholar (need only reach required skill ranks) instead of just Oxford-locationed professor if you buy such a cash shop item, but only require that you open all the European port permits to even be able to buy in cash shop. (another pay-for-convenience item)

In addition to the usual NPCs that add 3x ratio, also add the lesser versions of NPCs [Nanban Purveyor Bill] that add only 1.5x ratio at, say, half the price of the 3x-NPC version.  See http://uwodbmirror.ivyro.net/eg/main.php?id=01510032 for more information.

After a few months when more people start sailing heavy-size ships, then also, any ships that might be sold directly in cash shop (not just treasure boxes or sailor bottles)
    should be limited to
material ships (ships that have low ship rebuild / fusion costs)
that also have low level requirements (such as, for example, Festive Tarukaisens, Expedition Trading Clippers, Custom Stacked Turtle Ships, Custom Siams, etcetera, which none of the a/t/m level requirements exceed 15).

Ship skins that can be equipped onto any ship part slot for various kinds of ships (similar to EVE Online ship skins for various kinds of ships there).

Any and all premium content needs to be available to non-play players as well.  If u can buy a 100% speed buff, we should be able to purchase one from a play player.  so its not pay2win

Owvinll, school quests are not the only source of lower job cards, there are mediator quests too

Oxford 5/5/5 req is easiky gotten in short time, also for all the nations except English & dutch they have to open European port permits either by fame or by finishing 1 intermediate school(most are likely to have at least the minimum lvls required on the other 2 professions.thus such a cash item would be virtually useless

cash shop ships just for mats in fusion ??? not if you can do it with sy ships

What a lot of players don't realize even after two stints of this is that the balancing act that NM and OGP have done will not allow the server to survive.  If we remember correctly, BOTH NM and OGP did something to destroy the economy of the server at the end of their time here.  What this also means is that when the cash vs. non-cash material were balanced, they actually were not successful in making money.

So, in actuality, PP needs to come up with a way in which the cash players will have a clear and distinct advantage MORE than what happened during the "good and balancing days" of OGP and NM, but LESS than the last few weeks of their end, in order to continue their hosting of the server.

Don't expect the cash shop to be less advantageous to cash players than before, it's just going to kill the publisher's support of the server quicker.

Well... If you ask me I would say "make every single cosmetic in game a paid content" ... yes that means even to have half colored sail you need to pay money :D So they will less desperatly need to relase "p2w" content :)

I see it now, everyone sailing with white sails @@

you gonna put all crests in cash shop too???
    IGN:JackO'Neil
  • OwvinIIOwvinII Posts: 139Member Trainee
Only those crests that can't be obtained in-game may be in cash shops (cosmetic)
(such as Escape crest, Bingo Bongo crest, Age Of Revolution crest, for example, that can't be gotten from NPC sh(o/i)ps nor quest rewards)

    Shared Storage permits,
    Strongbox permits,
equipment storage expansions, [max is 3x per character]
,parts hardware storage expansions, [max is 3x per character]
,consumable storage expansions, [max is 3x per character]
,document storage expanions, [max is 3x per character]
,trade good storage expansions, [max is 3x per character]
,dock storage expansions, [max is 4x per character now (iirc)]
,captain's bag request [max is 2x per character]
,binder expansion request [max is 1x per character]
,vault expansion request [max is 1x per character]
,skill training request [max is 1x per character]

all of which should be tradeable
  • pieratthepieratthe Posts: 419Member Intermediate
It's easy to fix and understand.  As long as u make those items tradable from cash shop/pay chest. It's not pay2win.  Cause any non paying char can get ingame currency and then purchase those cash shop/pay chest items from paying players.  As long as u don't put ingame currency into paychest/cash shop, pay players will always need ingame currency from non-paying players.  It balances out.

lol try to type that w/o misspelling pay or play at least once :D

    @nancykay, that's a good point.  I hadn't thought about that.
  • xibwizxibwiz Posts: 77Member Beginner
suscription tier content like jp servers and cosmetic/comodity items that can be resold to non-pay-players will be good.  And by no motive should be sold ships, just mats (tradeable with non-pay-players too).

I have always thought it would be a great idea to have cash items/equipment that had requirements.

Like a storage boat that you could tow behind your boat with the skill tow. The higher the extra storage the higher rank you need of tow, and it could break the line and you would have to retrieve it. Pirates could steal it but it is locked to your character they would have to make it back to a dock and have a high enough unlock skill to open it. Although after an attempt of unlock it would be available for pick up at a major town in that area, and if no attempt was made within 5mins then it is made available for pick up.

Then another way was to have it were you could buy a piece of equipment for your aide that would allow them to follow you on land and enter land battles with you if you had a high enough rank in leadership, the higher level the leadership the more damage they can do. They would have the equipment that you gave them set the stats of what type of fighting style they would have.

Then for adventurers you could have a bird that can retrieve items from areas for you if you have a high enough collection rank but it is still a gamble and low chance to bring what you are asking for. Although higher rank means higher chance to get the item.

Also for pirate I would have a smokescreen effect item that blinded everybody in the radius of where it was used. Like dropping dry ice in water it would cover the surface of the water but you could still see most of the ship but you couldn't see names. The effect would only be available once a day and would have to craft using handicrafts before you could use again.

Last but not least for the pirate hunter have an item that will allow him to summon a nation ship based on his battle level and the rank of request reinforcements. When the pirate hunter is fighting a pirate he can use that item to summon a nation ship that is hated by the pirate. The higher request reinforcements the stronger the summon but R1 will be -10 battle below the player level, R15 would be +5. If at cap level the summon would gain extra armor. Also the pirate hunter would have to go to the nation of the hated pirate before tracking him down to receive the item after buying it from the cash shop.
