Skills for New Characters (New UWO Players, Please Read)

Hello, all.  I realize most of us on the forums are transplants from OGP; however, I am writing this post as a means of introducing UWO to the Papaya Play/Vertigo members who have not played UWO before.  I'd like to discuss the various important skills, and why, in my opinion, one should have these skills regardless of class:

Caution (Trade Skill)--avoids ambush from unseen NPC's
Accounts (Trade Skill)--allows haggling at Market Keeper (must be in certain jobs to learn skill)
Gunnery (Maritime Skill)--increases cannon load speed in sea battle (must be in certain jobs to learn skill)
Storage (Trade Skill)--process marine life into fish; reduces losses as a result of defeat in land or sea battle
Fishing (Adventure Skill)--allows you to catch fish at sea or near bodies of waters while in cities
Ballistics (Maritime Skill)--increases firing range of cannons
Accuracy (Maritime Skill)--increases short-range capability of cannons
Penetration (Maritime Skill)--increase damage capabilities of cannons
Surveying (Adventure Skill)--measures coordinates and allows you to view a mini-map in landing zones

I no longer include Sail Handing as a 'mandatory skill' since the auto-sailing feature is applied automatically, and the only benefit to ranking sail handling is a small increase in speed at each rank.  Again, these skills are NOT truly mandatory, but these are good skills for your character to learn, especially in the early-going.  If anyone has other skills, they'd like to add, please feel free to do so.  I wish you fair winds and following seas.

It was my understanding that Auto Sailing is automatically applied only if you have the Sail Handling skill. Regardless, 1% speed boost every 2 ranks isn't something to be ignored altogether with a fresh server. Being faster than the other Barcas in the zone is life at this stage (until someone playing on Hard Mode gets a Light Galley and starts grinding Rowing).

I would add Swordplay also into the list of skills to have regardless of preferred Class and play style. Any bonus in melee is better than no bonus.

I'd say Food Trading is a must for first part of game, since about 25% of trade goods are food, and it will help you make a profit and XP while port hopping.

Skills not necessary are perhaps a better topic?
    Procurement
    Wining and Dining
    Marching
Out of the Weapon skills.. I'd go the Sword route + assault and guard.  it requires fewest invested skill slots, and is good.
Boarding.. (don't need unless you are into heavy maritime or pirating)
Sociability (this is a skill i liked cause it gives you better prices on trade goods.. but its skippable)
    Reloading
Rowing (till you are going to hang out in a rowing ship for a year)

The one skill players often employ a second character to do for them is cooking.
A cooking alt needs almost no other skills.  Saves you a skill slot.  Personally, I just bought all of my food, but if you are the self-sufficient, entrepreneurial, or frugal type... youll want a cooking alt.

Out of all the crafting skills, casting is the king.  you will need ore trading to support it, at some point do these.

Also Sword Mastery is another good skill to have

Actually, I find Sociability to be important if you're either a merchant (for investment purposes) or adventurer (reporting map discoveries).  I also consider Marching important for adventurers, but not necessarily at the beginning.  I agree with the other skills you list as unimportant, especially the extremely useless (in my opinion) Wining & Dining.

What skills are considered essential to have really depends on your goals in UWO and you what plan to become. I have some that I recommend everyone gets:

    Storage
    Body language
    Sail handling
    Surveying
    Survival
    Steering
    Caution

Agree with much of the above, so will not repeat any of those.
If you find you like to do shipwrecks, then get the sw skill and then the haul skill as soon as you have room.  They take a long time to level, and the wrecks in the northern passage- when we all get to that point-  will be doable with a good ship and crew with those skills

your going to want Sail handling Rank 3 at least, its required for Navigation which is required for later in game for ship skills.

I'd recommend as must have skills:
Fishing (To get food in the middle of the ocean)
Procurement (to get water in the middle of the ocean)
Frugality (to reduce consume of food and water, specially if in the middle of the ocean)
Surveying (to find yourself in the middle of the ocean)
    Sail handling (+speed)
Steering (+turning speed - for some ships, turning is quite a problem)
Caution (avoid unwanted combat, that could slow you down)
Storage (save cargo if beaten and not waste your trip in the middle of it)
Repair (to repair your ship's damage)
Body language (to be able to comunicante to anyone)
Swordplay (to have a chance on land battles and sea melee battles)
Navigation (to enable some ship useful skills)
Management (to enable some other useful ship skills)

This is all good stuff, thank you. As some have pointed out, however unpleasant wiping the entire server is, these are the cards we've been dealt. And for all the complaining an bemoaning of how difficult it will be to get the world back up and running again, I suggest putting some of that energy into something constructive. I'd like to encourage more 'veteran' players to post instructive tips, specifically how to best get the economy, ports available as well as what to make sure you have/do and what not to waste your time on.  I for one am relatively new but eager to join with everyone, work as a team and personally put in the time and work to get things up and running asap. I have the motivation, I just need the direction. I'm sure I'm not alone.  :)

Well the best advice I can give you is to figure out if you want to do battle or a trader or adventure as the skills for each are different then grind and grind and grind till you can't see straight then grind some more and you will raise the skills you want.Like I was a tailor and raise my sewing to 15 then refined it and raised it to 15  again before they closed the game and was working on that skill for weeks and weeks but it was worth it and I used some of the stuff I made for Ea and nanban  trade

    Venetian Skill guide - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bX_B6tJ9_HX0SVQG6DJhzImo0eX2R5gTaeLcAe1wSKQ/edit?usp=sharing

Doesn't encompass all skills required but for early stages these will definitely boost your utility as a Venetian. Other nations may be able to use this guide as well just changing out certain trade jobs so your main is how you want him built. this guide is specifically for Venetian's and FEATHER grind.

once you make your way out of EU then skills such as Navigation become available. hope this helps
yes I have set it up for 3 characters but will modify if they change that.
also, notice I set it up so each character is a specialty for different tiers of Trade goods so you can best use those Purchase Orders later in game.

I'd recommend players to start as Adventurer because you don't want to sail like turtle without Sail Handling ,but you complete all beginner schools without difficult to get all cards.

    Skills must have for everyone.

    Sail Handling
Surveying (don't forget to get GVO Navi or any kind of map assist)
    Rescue
    Repair
    Steering
    Account
    Sociability
    Caution
    Frugality
Body Language (All players will start with ,so don't delete it)
    Management
    Navigation
    Procurement
    Leadership
    Recognition for Charting

    Optional

Survival (It's must for rowing users and pirates)
Arms (If you plan to be full time Maritimer. It's totally useless for trader, though)
    Collection
Eradication (needs only one for admiral if you plan to use alts)
Pathology (It's must for rowing users)
Surgery (It's must for pirates, melee lovers, and rowing users)

Skills must have for Dungeoneer and Land Battler

    Traps (Archaeology, Biology, and Geography)
    Merchandise Knowledge (Provision)
    Marching
    First Aid
    Unlock
    Swordplay
    Sword Mastery
Plunder (Apparently, it does work in dungeon and land battle after Age of Revolution patch)

    Optional
    Throwing
    Sniping
    Bow Attack

Since you mentioned Marching, how, more precisely does it help you in landing areas (especially with adventurer discoveries & land charting), as it's in-game description is pretty vague?

marching simply lessens the fatigue of your crew the longer you are on land, that was my understanding of the skill.

yea it's only good for certain things.  Like finesse grinding where ur standing in the outskirts all day.  If you do LOADS of collecting, or if u run the endless dungeons.  Other than that i can't think of a use for it.

If you do a lot of shipwrecks, marching is important for when you come across a ghost ship as well.

Problem is a lot of us will be stock in EU for a while and will already have grinded our casting, hc and such before we can access management skill.

That is unfortunate really cos it’s good to do them at the same time.
    ritz00000000
  • LaviolLaviol Posts: 193Member Trainee
Well, we can get to the Carrib by just trading for fame. Save your grinding until u get it.

Your gonna need food before management anyways. So stick to taverns for a while

you will need at least a r3 storage for management, so if you are going to grind anything, at least that skill to be prepared.
