tough decision

i have played this great game for 7+ years.  to have all that work just lost  is heartbreaking. it feels like i was robbed. i love this game and am having a difficult time deciding what to do. there are lots of pros and cons  so i just don't know.
  • Pros
  • its easier to re-grind now than it was before.
  • leveling is easier with charting- nanban- and battle reports
  • i have the knowledge now to not make the mistakes i made before which puts me ahead of the curve.
  • CONS
  • losing everything
  • starting over
  • i dont trust papaya
  • piracy rules  i need to see what exactly they will be.
  • most of my friends are not returning
  • not sure if this game can survive this betrayal- lies- robbery
now i guess i will talk to my son and see what he wants to do . and see if this is even worth it.

I'm using this as an opportunity to try other games. I always feel it is good to live out my limited life by having different experiences.

    Clemsonfan,

I am in the same boat as you. I was definitely upset about the reset and was ready not to return, but Papaya is trying to make some effort to retain old players.  I have gone back to playing Company of heroes and Patrician.
I think the tipping factor for me will be if they fix the founders rewards for the Steam players.

You are right Clem, it is a tough decision. Papaya is not making it any easier. I think a few of us are in this spot. The cons do outweigh the pros though. Each day not playing, however, is making it easier to not put myself through what will most likely be a failed grind. If server population could not keep it going on OGP, it is a big gamble to wipe it all and hope for new players to replace the Vets that leave. On OGP, how many companies were able to rebuild and gain a SY3? It took alot of team work to accomplish the needed population for those and not many companies had a SY3 and still have a decent colony. What little cooperation we had among company members or even during an ESF is small potatoes compared to what will be needed to reshape a reset world and maintain a revenue steam for Papaya.

I'd personally suggest first contacting Papaya and trying to convince them to reverse course on discarding the past 7+ years worth of progress, achievements, and development in UWO. That would convince a lot of people leaving to return (probably cautiously) and avoid the loss of everything that we stand to lose, remove the unnecessary regrind, and make it easier to sustain and support newcomers to the server. They could regain some lost trust, without which any further investment of time or money into the game becomes increasingly easier to justify not bothering with.

But if they say no, ignoring the very users they claim to put first, that'd probably make the decision a lot easier. It's your call to make; I wish you well in reaching that difficult decision either way, and thank you for your years of playing and service to help make UWO the wonderful game it once was. As fun as UWO was, it wouldn't have been worth playing without the users that shaped and cultivated it into the game it once was, and likely never will be again post reset.

I'm looking at Europa Universalis IV and Civilization VI. EU3 was my addiction before UWO and its sequel seems like a good candidate to become the one after :). Depends ofc if you're into that kind of games.

    Sta,

My son gave up EA for Civ 6. UWO is just too slow and grindy for him. I also have several friends who are now top players of EU. We are all big fans of world history in the age of discovery.  They introduced me to UWO but they gave up UWO for EA.
I kept with it because I am a fan of naval history as well.

Are you doing multiplayer games on EU? I never tried it on EU3. And ofc after a while, the AI being AI becomes easy to beat once you've learned the game.

You can PM me some point of contact of you feel like it :).

I have some of the same concerns you do, clemsonfan.  What I intend to do, is give it a shot.  If I don't like it, I leave easy enough.  Sure I might waste a bit of time, but it is time I probably would be playing a game anyway so no big deal.

I look at all the future pirates drooling. I think about the time needing to be spent unlocking ports/regions/goods/archives, etc. If they relax piracy rules to an extreme, my time will be very short-lived. Also, a HUGE consideration is how poorly they monetize the cash shop...

Goosio do you think we all need to spam the support mail account with the statements we have made here on the forum? If they dont listen to us here on the forum I doubt they would listen to us if we wrote the same to the support team.

Lying to us by saying our data is gone isn't a good way to start this already rocky relation.  How can you use our lost data for founder stuff if it is lost...

i think lots of old vets will return if you love this game then they will be back. might take some time and they might make a toon just to check in, but sooner or later most will return no other game like this online.

    Voyage Century Online

I must warn you that it has long curve to learn because it has lack of tutorial or what not. I had to delete my toon twice because I made blunder mistake like buy Pure Irons ,but I didn't realize that I paid for 160k while left me less than 50k. Oh, you can be pirate from begiinning of game :).

Windward and Seafighting have been suggested that can be similar to UWO.

The sad fact here is there is nothing else out there like UWO.  I haven't come across anything else (MMOO-wise) with adventure quests in real world historic sites.  Anything that looks like it has decent ship battles is either only just about PVP or has animal people running around in some fantasy world.

I tried Pirates of the Burning Sea a long time ago but I wasn't fond of the art style or the ship battle and it just felt like a crappy version of UWO.

I played Archeage for a bit a while back.  It was refreshing to have an open world without load screens.  And I was half way to max level after playing casually for like 5 minutes which seemed lovely.  But the cat people, all the weird looking buildings, and big goofy looking armour just isn't my scene.  I didn't even stick with it long enough to get to the ship battle, which did look fun.

I played Gloria Victis a few times recently, which is still in beta and has a small population.  No sailing and no real world locations.  But it has kind of a Game of Thrones kind of vibe and I like the medieval open world, and the very low fantasy part.  The PVE is fun and the PVP looks like a blast if I keep playing.  It seems to have some extensive crafting.  And I like the skill setup not being restricted at all.  But not nearly as much to do as in UWO so again I keep coming back.

Sea of Thieves looks like really fun game-play.  But the fact that it looks like a Disney cartoon keeps putting me off.  I will most likely try that one eventually and see if I can't get past the cartoonyness of it since at least it has some exploration content on top of fun looking ship battle.  Also it has a seemless world you can circumnavigate but sadly not based on the real world.  Not sure about their crafting or economy.

I really like the realistic art style of Blackwake and the PVP looks like crazy fun.  But that's all there is to it.  I hop on youtube and marvel over how great the game looks and how fun the battles look but there is just nothing to do but non-stop PVP.  So I go from "wow this looks awesome" to bored stiff after just checking out 15 minutes of game-play videos.

I looked at Black Desert Online which seems to have a lot going for it, but once again we get into the fantasy thing.

So I don't know man.  You want a reality based or at least low fantasy MMO with ship battle, trading, crafting, and has some adventure or at least exploration...  it's just not out there.  You have to start making some big trade offs really quick and what you're left with is not even that good.  I don't understand why we can't make an MMO with sailing that doesn't look like the armor was designed by Gene Simmons and has a bunch of mutant looking creatures running around.  Not to mention all the corny battle effects that look like their meant to educe a seizure or entrance a four year old.

If anybody finds anything even remotely similar to what UWO has to offer, I would love to hear about it too.  With everything I love about UWO the one thing that always got to me was all the relentless grinding.  And now right as I had my maritimer, crafter and adventurer literally right on the cusp of end-game, it's all back to square one with the grinding again.  Sisyphus comes to mind...

I will be back in UWO reluctantly.  And I hope to start enjoying myself again eventually if I can make it past the grind to get back where I was.  But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't grasping at straws for something else to similar to play.
