Grinding Maritime question...

Gilligan8567Gilligan8567 Posts: 116Member Trainee
Just curious on what ship type everyone is planning to use and why for grinding maritime early on? Especially since SBing will presumably be in its infancy. I plan to roll Dutch and do enjoy doing the Baltic BRs, and plan to do all three schools as well. I am also asking this due to wanting to lvl SBing this time around and plan to get Tactics to r7 ASAP, I have heard some people say row ships are the best and others that sail ships are the only way to go with speed/wave/dura, melee v gunnery. I understand its mostly play style choice, but just wanted to hear from others as to what their choices are and past experience with each type since NC ships will probably not be available early on and modding will be a ways off.

Thanks

    I plan to fleet with company members and friends if possible to have the BRs go quicker, especially when farming all 200 ships plus boss fleets. Heavy Carrack sounds interesting, nice combo of guns and crew.

    I am aiming for 30ish trade prior to changing into a Maritime ship. so I will use a Transport Large Galley to grind my Maritime to 32 for a La Reale. I am gonna focus on Rowing ships early on since its good to have sailing up to venice. also so I don't have to try and grind the rowing skill later on once I get to where I wanna be for lvls. so this my give me a slight disadvantage at the beginning but in the end it will pay off I hope.

    I've been curious about rowing ships, I had a Mod Heavy Galleass, but it was only partially modded and no special rowing skills, even with rowing she was slow in and out of battle so I was kind of turned off by that. I have been thinking about the Arabian Galley or even the Flanders Galley as possible ships to use, but still not sure.

    so I can't say 100% sure, but Refined Rowing R15 addes ALOT of Acceleration. armour also helps acceleration, and you were using the ROWING skill correct>? you have to activate it, its not a passive skill. that is one thing they could change, make Rowing Passive, if your in a rowing ship it gains prof. then more people would like rowing ships. issue now is only 2 skills + rowing can be used in battle, unless you have a NC item to allow 4 skills total at 1 time.

    I did have the rowing skill and had it up to r6 or 7 I believe, it just felt so slow in battle turning, thankfully the high crew number meant that accidental melee battle was going to be in my favor either way. lol My Custom Razee Frigate was much much faster, but fully modded too.

    well a MHG isn't the best Rowing ship iirc.
    Modified Heavy Galleass - http://uwodbmirror.ivyro.net/eg/main.php?id=50000508
    where you could get something like
    Agile La Royale - http://uwodbmirror.ivyro.net/eg/main.php?id=50000573

    modding will again be a big factor but having Rowing Assist will also help turning - http://uwodbmirror.ivyro.net/eg/main.php?id=30002002

    I am taking it the ALR is a NC ship, but I can see where maybe the La Reale, Flanders or Arabian Galley are better ships?

    I stole this from a Guide,

    6. Rowing
    Exclusive to galley type ships, this ship attribute is only in effect when the character skill rowing is active. Rowing adds additional speed that is not affected by wind direction, it’s added as an independent 3rd component after vertical and horizontal sail power calculated. The amount added is calculated as:
    Rowing power of ship * rowing rank * 10%.
    Each rank of the character skill, rowing, can utilize 10% of the existing ship’s rowing power. (r1=10%, r2=20% etc..) At rowing rank 10 you fully utilize the rowing power of the ship. A rowing rank higher than 10 can over utilize the rowing power the of ship by 10% per rank. R20 rowing will add 200% rowing power final sail power.
    Example:
    A La Royale with 205 vertical sail, 90 horizontal sails, and 100 rowing power.
    A person with rank 5 rowing uses it in side wind condition will result in,
    Total sailing power = 205*0.625 + 90*0.625 + 100*5*0.1 = 234
    A person with rank 15 rowing uses it in side wind condition will result in,
    Total sailing power = 205*0.625 + 90*0.625 + 100*15*0.1 = 334

    so at Rank 6/7 you were only using roughly 60-70% of the rowing speed possible, make sense?

    It does actually, that is a great guide to rowing. Thanks! I may reconsider rowing ships for trading/maritime, I know Northern Europe has been favorable to sail ships vs rowing, but I don't think it will matter much either way in the game until rank skills are up.

    Rowing is awesome, yes you have to use one of ur 3 skills for it, but rowing ships are faster and out accel regular battle ships if ur rowing is high enuff.

    I will grind maritime in 3 steps.  Once early on to about rank 30 using whatever I can... such as a battle galleon.  Next to rank 60  in whatever improved advanced ship I can, once the world has been unlocked.  Next to rank 85+ using whatever my end-game battle ship is.

    That is good to know - will probably consider a rowing ship early on if I can find the right ship until my SBing is high enough. Thanks.

    How does rowing compare to the normal sailing ships like those with 1k sails?

    (this is an over-simplification, yet globally close to true)... Each rank of rowing adds the equivalent of 10 vertical sail power to your ship.

    I'm definitely going to use some of this. I haphazardly leveled maritime a while ago, as an afterthought. Of course, all the pirates were HUGE number of times stronger than I was at that point, so nothing I did really mattered.

    rowing will give you a huge acceleration, but at breakneck speed you are quite unlikely to catch any fast sailing ship which has already gotten some speed, unless he is in headwinds or you spent your college fund for a god mod.

    i used an armed trade carrack the first time and i loved it but it wasn't so fast... or powerfull... if we get chance to get frigates i will go with those then super corvette or xebec frigate as im more used to fast sail ships and kitting than rowers, if not i guess it will be heavy carrack then xebecs, i will avoid galleons or similar until much later when they get enough armor to compensate for the low speed

    and really low crew which makes your cannons ineffective, and a nightmare to melee anythign bigger than a barca

    One of my company members gave me a rough calculation of crew + guns = % of power efficiency, but I cant remember anymore what that was. lol

    I am thinking if I do go rowing, then either the La Reale, Arabian Galley (if available) or Flanders Galley would be good choices.

    Sail ships would be using the Graduation Frigate and grouping up for BRs to quickly upgrade to a bigger sail ship, the Xebec Frigate/Super Corvettes look very interesting as I have never paid attention to those ships before.

    No let me simplify it for you,   if ur r10 rowing it adds ur entire "row stats of ship" to ur sailpower,    if u r20 rowing, it adds double ur "row stats of ship" to ur sail power

    r5 = .5x
    r10 = 1x
    r15 = 1.5x
    r20 = 2x

    Which is why the row stat on ship is so important, say ur r20 in a ship with 100 row, it adds +200 to ur sailpower.

    if ur r20 in a ship with 124 row (g6 exp)  it adds 248 to ur row power

    Hi! I'm planning to do BRs as well. Are there any companies where i can join?
  • pieratthepieratthe Posts: 419Member Intermediate
    I will be doing BR's as well, I'll also be helping people grind any and all maritime skills.  But here's a problem.  Where-as i would love to have me and 4 other players in the fleets grinding.  It seems we are allowed alts.  So that greatly reduces the number of peeps i can help at a time, from 4 down to just 2. Sorry but i don't see the point in doing BR's multiple times with different toons.  I personally think it should just be 2 per person, but that's me.

    dumb question.. but what is a BR?? Haven't played for a long time uwo
  • GoeticGoetic Posts: 0Member Beginner
    Early in game I will probably go with Arabian Galley. It's requirements are low and the crew/cargo is decent enough to breeze through 200 kills on  lower level BR .
