Goodbye friends: UWO ended on September 28

iotarhoiotarho Posts: 0Member Beginner
After a couple of fun years and lots of adventures with friends it's time to say goodbye.  I'd hoped that Papaya had something exciting in store for UWO, but the writing is on the wall with their 1) unfortunate non-communication and apparent disregard for veteran players' opinions during the handover from OGP and 2) in the embarrassingly bad 'conciliation prizes' intended to placate 7+ years of dedication that many people have put in.

I would have been excited for a revamp of the game, and would have even happily given up all my toys and ships and worldly possessions if Papaya would have at least let us keep the characters (levels+skill ranks+titles) we've all been building for months and years.  However, I just can't see recharting seas and land, redoing 2000+ quests, regrinding and refining all sorts of skill ranks, defecting through all those nations, building up through various titles, and so much more, just because Papaya wants to take the easy solution and do a total reset.

A total wipe might have worked if Papaya weren't resetting to a game that basically runs on an almost decade-old engine.  Papaya has completely misjudged the strength of UWO, which is certainly not in stunning graphics or fast-paced gameplay, but rather came from the characters that all of you breathed life into, and the depth that those characters helped provide to the UWO world.

By deciding to take the easy route and wipe away all those characters--those 100s of thousands of combined hours you all put into those characters--Papaya has, for me at least, taken away the lifeblood of UWO.

The final nails in the coffin are the names of so many players whose company I'd enjoyed and respected that have announced they're leaving UWO.  For them and for me, UWO ended with 'lights out' at OGP on September 28.  I'm happy to have had a chance to say goodbye to a few of you then, and bid adieu to the rest of you now.

Sincerely,
Rivea

Sorry to see you go! I think you're going to turn out to be absolutely wrong on some of your predictions, but I guess you'll never know for sure unless you give it a try. It's seems odd that you wouldn't at least give it a shot for a week or two if you've only played for two years. The old UWO will never come back, much like other games that have shut down, but there is a new UWO with the same game mechanics and playing style. If you really like UWO it's available to play, if not then there are other games, or even real life things to do. Best wishes to you for whatever you choose!

How do we know it's on the same engine, how do we know anything?  The only things we know are:

    1. Server reopens on the 18th.
    2. Some form of piracy/deckbattle will return
    3. The char files have been wiped clean.
    4. And the new host is called Papaya play.

    We  "know"  nothing else.

UWO is a game, not ur life.  It's not like u spent years building ur house from scratch, and then a hurricane comes along and removes all that.  You refering to pixels and a GAME.  You spent all that money and time enjoying "playing" a game.  This isn't like that game "2nd life" where u can actually use it to better ur real life self.  "yea in 2nd life, my mom plays.  You can trade ingame currency for real life money into ur bank account"  I can see u getting all upset over wiping something like that.  But UWO is designed to let u pass time, and enjoy doing something with friends, not "Getting rich" or "Getting big" ingame.

And in my opininon, people who are that upset are more interested in theirselves, then the game.  They arent playing for fun, they are playing to feel accomplished, and I for one am glad those types won't be returning. :D

Personally I feel where you are coming from, but at the same time I see it as this. I enjoy playing the game as it is grinding with friends and going on adventures. For you to say UWO has ended means you have given up on it and don't enjoy playing it anymore so the best bet for you is to quit, but for me I see it as they have opened the doors to a great and enjoyable story once again.

I was gonna post a long, windy post about why after I log in and do a quick look around to see how bad everything really is (because we haven't really been told much) I probably wasn't going to be sticking around.
You posted for me in about a third of the words, thanks!   And good luck

I gave up trying to reason with his kind, now I just reply to them to deter other people from leaving.

Posts like these just show you two things:
    1. they care about something that's not theirs, meaning they never read ToS
    2. and they don't care about the game at all, even though they wouldn't have been able to play if papaya didn't take over, meaning they wouldn't have access to their data anyway.

I didn't see many people point to the 2nd point, and to those who have, kudos!

Pie, Pie, Pie.... if you only knew what a great person Rivea is...you would have voiced your post differently.

Rivea, I thank you so much for your help and advice during my time here in UWO.  You, together with people like Roiber, Sky'sTheLimit, DikaFranky, Vincent, CadillacShrimpin, Gazi and countless others, showed me goodness.  Truly honorful you are in your actions.

We never spoke in the game, but I knew of your reputation, and respected you for your accomplishments, as well as your contributions. I am sorry to see you go, but do not blame you for your decision; as you said, there's just no point in going through all of that again... particularly not since it could be reset again without warning, or consideration. Journey well, wherever your voyages may take you.

Rivea, I'm not sure if you got my PM.  But I'll take the spreadsheet if you still have them.  We've made a forum elsewhere that we can store these things.

I think iotarho has some really great points. I know a great sounding argument from you haters is, "it's only a game", but some of us put in 6 or 7 years to the game, to make it more enjoyable, to help others, to make friends. It's sad that a lot of us didn't get to say 'goodbye' to friends and allies.
I think that while it could be 'enjoyable' again to grind through all those ranks and skill levels, the irony is that at some point in 6 or 7 years it could all be wiped out again, and I'll be left wondering if i should have spent all those hours doing something more productive. And some of the haters, if they stick around that long will feel the loss that I feel.
I know a lot of people think OGP screwed the game royally, but let's not forget that when it took over the game from NetMarble, all the user levels and items remained attached to the characters, and that is something that PapayaPlay seems unwilling to do. So it's possible to transfer it, but the new owners were unwilling for some odd reason.
Fare thee well other longtime players. If you find another MMO that's worth it, lmk what you're playing.
