Abbreviations - Help for newbies (and me)

HelloAllHelloAll Posts: 701Member Intermediate
So there is so many abbreviations in this game. I got confused so many times.

Could we all add the ones we know here?
It would help me, but also any new ones.

Because believe me when you are new they are very confusing.

So let’s add them here...and I call on your experienced ones to do this because I am new also.

So could someone add the ships please, and the items.

Such as.

QMP = quest mediation permit

PO = Purchase Order

You get the idea.
If someone could do a nice neat one that would be amazing.
Also save it if you do and maybe when the forum is fully set up it may become a sticky.

Thanks.

Somchai

    You can call me a grammar/language Nazi and you probably wouldn't be that far off the mark, but this is my take on abbreviations:

    If you wish to communicate, then you need to be certain that your intended audience understands your abbreviations.  Which basically means don't use any abbreviations at all except maybe some that are tried and true like "lol" or "imho" or "UWO".

    And if you don't wish to communicate, then why are you posting in the first place?

    If you are just posting to stroke your own ego or pat yourself on the back for purchasing a "CTG" or an "FFCV" then please, stop wasting our time.

    If you are using abbreviations to "save keystrokes", as so many claim, please understand that it actually uses more keystrokes and much more time when you have to explain your abbreviation anyhow to someone who questions it.

    As always....imho

    Meh, you get used to them eventually. I suggest bearing in mind that most people only recognise ship abbreviations as referring to the astro variants. Thus I recommend phrasing it with the differing word in full. e.g. CHC can be Cruise or Celebratory High Clipper. Most would use CHC for Celebratory, thus say CruiseHC for non-astro variant.

    I personally think when it comes to ships and ships skills and maybe non every day objects items that we should just type it all in full.

    I understand things like MCCT’s is a bit of a mouthful.

    But let’s not destroy the English language :D

    thing that gets me about mccts is that we used to call them mcts

    Yea, I think you guys are right about only abv. the long stuff.  But I've actually noticed this in other platforms too.  People are abv. all kinds basic words from the english language. (oh gosh now I'm self conscious and feel I need to spell out abbreviation). So it's not just an UWO thing. Wreaks of laziness.

    Other platforms meaning most anything that has to do with online messaging, chat rooms, etc.

    @spiekums
    In case you weren't aware, there is a character limit per chat. Have you considered for a moment that we abbreviate in order to avoid spamming the chat? Especially since world chats enforce a spam filter (if you send too many chats at once it blocks you for a minute or so).

    Well that's dumb. I suggest for those selling to use UWO Marketplace (www.uwomarket.com). Maybe the mate running the site could add a "Want to Buy" section.

    @HeavyWater
    Well, you could simply use the first letter of every word, like instead of the phrase I just used, I would say "Wycsutfloew".  That would avoid spamming the chat right?  And if people aren't going to understand what you are saying due to abbreviations that is hardly different from them not understanding what you are saying due to some other butchering of the English language.
