I'm going to aim for 52/60/60 first. High enough for a Vaisseau 6/6, LTC/TC and a Clipper. Make sure I can make my way around the game and stuff. :p THen work on other things.
@Madcatz0543i got the feeling you didn't think this through so ill give your the benefit of doubt, you say you did lose against a pirate because he has better levels ship and skill and the solution is to lower your own levels leaving him just as powerful as he was before.
making it harder for players to reach the level to use ships actually able to battle is never gonna be in favor of those people. this suggestion only benefits the pirates which will have easier prey everywhere.
imagine the same battle, a La Mort catches you hes got refined rowing 220 crew and repairs to fast for you to damage him but instead of a speedy CRF which well modded should had been more than enough to defend yourself, this time you have a school frigate, you get raped even faster, and you got no way to raise to a better ship which may give you a better chance.
and the worse is i can see this being implemented, because someone was stupid enough to suggest it AND it allows for faster sail of pay2win ships which soon will have lower level reqs as their only benefit.

Theed - I was using my Modified Heavy Galleass to grind BRs in order for me to be high enough level to use my CRF, I could not use it at the time we were attacked by a pirate player in an Aug Norske Love. My MHG was easy for him to sink and he was fast enough to avoid any melee, my company mate was able to hold off long enough to a stalemate and just retreated to end the battle.
The maritimer I was playing before OGP sold us out, was doing almost exclusively BRs. His skills kept pace with his levels fairly well because I always saved the admiral for last and I never used any magic. He was melee so I used guns to sink enough ships to have two remaining, and then I meleed those two. Without BRs I would not have even begun this toon. Maritime in UWO is too boring to spend much time doing it. BRs allow someone to play a higher level maritimer without dying of boredom on the way there.
you only need one ship in with support skills and both players to have a min of melee practice and surgery.
Most pirates run from anything that doesn't look like easy prey, i pulled one LLM to a standstill in the Caribbean and on the last days made a certain famous pirate retreat on his LLM on SF with my ingermanland (which is notably a slow ship) and mediocre battle skills, ANL was a mid rank ship at best so i believe it was more your lack of experience than his skill that you couldn't catch or corner him on MHG.

Agree, but I don't like the idea that you can grind the same spot over and over again... essentially reaching level 85 only practicing against one ship type.
Can someone please explain what a Battle Report is? Is it a Maritime quest that gets completed and you report it? or is it something that you could buy via Astros/Bottles. How again, did it screw up the game? Sorry, I guess I never got a high enough level (my last Maritime lever was 21) to clearly understand battle reports. Would appreciate just a quick explanation (i.e. Battle Reports for Dummies)
Battle reports is a maritime quest you can get them at Seville London AND some other places. You fight 200 ships plus a few formable fleets and get good XP and fame and good pay outs for it
Thanks so much. I heard about a quest to fight a lot of ships, but never encountered it. I guess either I didn't ask the right Maritime Guild Master or my level was too low. Also I hadn't completed Final Maritime. That was going to be my last Final, but I was grinding Casting when OGP sold out.
I kinda have to agree that BRs should be done in moderation. Yeah, you get a lot of battle EXP and fame but it's easy to forget that your battle skills dont get that same treatment, the latter being more important. It would be pretty embarrassing to be high level in battle and not high in battle skills
The value of Battle Reports gaining levels is not to become proficient in battle but to gain more overall skill slots that one could use elsewhere. That said, it surely causes confusion at sea when one has little or no idea how strong a high-level mariner actually is. Oddly enough, it can actually make the game more interesting for the more adventurous who might want to gamble on attacking a higher level ship.
I disagree, you don't like the path BRs offer then don't do them and do it the oldie way you like.
grinding skills is very different from lvl enhancement. a real maritimer will focus yes on the skills grinding but the lvls aren't just for a maritimer but also for a trader "who don't have most of battle skills and has no ambition to grind them" and an adventure, these lvls are still very important for them even without skills.
If people choose to do BR's then thats up to them, why the nerf? It like you say, a level 40 can beat a level 80 because they grinded their skills and probably refined them, also don't forget dungeons give battle related points, maybe this person who got beat was more skilled up for dungeons?
BR was really nice when getting close to the levels for a better ship. Get the ship, then back to skill grinding until I got close to the next big ship change. BR was way too boring to do all the time.
BRs are great for exp and fame, and SOME are excellent for skills as well, but if you're doing the ones in front of London, don't expect to get to max rank skills any time soon. And don't try to PVP with r3 Gunnery and no mellee, should go without saying, but sometimes it needs to be said.

How can battle reports not lvl up skills and add to them esp arms skill.
Some players are just very strong, have their key board set up
