How bad was it?

This is actually a legitimate question: How bad was this game under OGP management?

I played it for about 6 months under Netmarble (the original publisher, for those who joined late) and then a few months towards the end of Netmarble's domain. I played it for a couple months under OGP, but they hadn't really touched the game yet at that point.

So what did OGP do and how bad did they do it ?

I hear people say OGP is corrupt, but I recall Netmarble's president, along with other employees, being fined and charged with legal fraud and corruption within their company. And the amount of spamming gold-sellers floating their little dinghies around save ports was probably half the server population under them as well.

How bad was OGP compared to Netmarble then?

NETMARBLE damaged the games furture irreparably, releasing 1B investment bonds before nanban trade was established completely negated the need for trade to invest.  1B when ambon was the best source of income was just rediculous.  Soon after they sold the rights away.

Nothing good to say about Netmarble, i didnt give OGP much of a chance but it seems they made "kneejerk" decisions that didnt help things at all.

    Just my opinions

I played for the last two years and enjoyed to game. I didn't notice any problems myself. But I did hear of some, particularly that gm coolwind douche. That was a big deal, but I never was affected.
May the winds blow you well

OGP has to be one of worst publishers because they lost load of good MMOs which was due to their inability to manage .OGP deliberated to nerf or remove to make players to spend on astro more that started one year ago I think.

Tbh, OGP has bad repute before they took over OGP from NM.

Oh, OGP struggled to deal with hackers (remember DDOS attack ?), Gold Seller, and others.

Higher ups are reason why OGP fell apart because they're clueless how to manage online games.

I remember Batt did say something about Bad Credits and it wasn't Coolwind's fault that escaped me atm ,so OGP was doom from beginning after it founded.

@seapiratedeluxe Welcome back, fellow Netmarble survivor :)

It was when I logged in for a while at the end of Netmarble's era, when the game went to hell in a hand basket. It seemed to slip into limbo; some sort of void of hell, where the Netmarble's abuse was unchecked, nobody was around to update, or do anything to the game and inflation took over everything.

I don't know specifically what OGP added or did to the game under it's hosting. for that matter, I don't really know what kind of cash shop items they introduced, other than the general sense that they all pretty much broke the game even more than they "fixed" it.

    @Lerxst

It only took 5-6 years to get a a reset, better late than never i suppose.  Maybe this time papaya will get it right and i will have no problem giving them my full support.

Honestly if they just remove investment bonds and reset pirating to something similar to the original way. Those 2 things will bring the players back. (hope they are listening)

    • Increased revenue of 8 years old game through community management strategy and events/promotions.

Please tell me hes not referring to UWO

increased revenue after netmarble bled it for every penny they could at the same time completely killing the games emotional attachment to the player.

OGP would still be running and making money on UWO if they added a new server and stoped selling those items that killed it.

According to OGP wiki, he probably was part of team that removed Deck Battle for PVP and nerfed piracy. I'd say he did make wise decision by bailed out on OGP then joined Papaya because he knew OGP won't last that long.

I wonder is he known for GM_Muiz ? that some sites did mention that former OGP GM worked for Papaya.

For a while after ogp took over things were ok, the same like any game publisher (are there any good ones?)

For every person here who hated the pirate nerfs, there was another who didn't care and yet another who was happy (if not 2 or 3).  More people were trading, more people were adv, things were ok though how heavy handed the pirates nerfs were did get a lot of us a little worried (don't get me wrong they needed the nerfs badly but it was a little harsh)

Even coolwind i thought was over-hated.  He went a little crazy with the ban-bat but a lot of those people would have been banned in any other game for some of the crap they pulled so I always wondered what the big deal was.  (you don't name out a gm and call him a <censored> in worldchat, you just don't do it ;P  )

After the ddos attacks things seemed to change.  ogp couldn't/wouldn't stop it, they didn't seem to care.  They started getting greedy in the astro shop, bottle drops got even worse and filled with even more useless crap.  and the last six months were weird, everything seemed out of whack.  The past year ogp was bad even for a game publisher.

Polish Gaming News describes OP Planet as this.

OG Planet is the worst gaming company ever.

They went through 10 games in 5 years. This is a fact.

OGP was actually not that bad. There were some highlights. But the company was brought down by a big bad apple.

    Maritime highlight:
They removed forged cannon, and organised quite a few pvp tournament. The also removed the widely hated forced deck battle so that pvpers could actually engage 30 minutes long battles, while adopting lots of unique tactics, such as mine, ram, demolition, set fire, none of which were relevant prior to removing god cannons and forced deck battle.

Could have been better with trade and adventure:
The major failure of OGP's is their bottle system.

OGP have made ships too rare so that a lot of players spent most of their time on nanbaning. A have a few friends who have accumulated several hundred billions of ducats just from endless nanbaning for years. I call them being played by the game rather than play the game. They eventually acquired the last few dream ships they ever wanted right before the server wipe. What a tragedy.

OGP also put either the same or better adventure end-game rewards into the bottle, e.g. Improved Excalibur, which makes adventure irrelevant to the rest of the community. Almost everything from adventure has a better counterpart from bottle.

    Reason for OGP downfall:
I believe the reason why OGP was shaped in such a way was because they hired a maritime player GM Coolwind.

He was a decent maritime player prior to becoming GM. He understands a great deal of how to make maritimers happy.

However he lacks expertise on the rest of the game system.
    • He is not a good game-economy governor either. And he has very low EQ (even though his IQ is good),
    • He tends to get mad at players who disproves him, and would use outrageous and unethical means to punish them. E.g. he would log on someone's character and threaten to dismantle the player's company. He would also scapegoat an entire company to be gold-sellers due to his own incompetency to track down the real gold sellers.
    • He adopted IP based block which falsely blocked a lot of (more than 50 at least) players who happened to use a same popular VPN for playing the game, due to their country's foreign web-connection censorship.
While he was acting as a GM, somehow the bottles were made full of trash items, not only were lacking of prestige, but sometimes became insulting to buyers. There was a feedback from a steam new player who spent $200 real money after 2 months of playing but got absolutely nothing other than some junk which could either be easily possessed from in-game activity, or worth little to no value.

Eventually this GM was sacked by OGP.

Retrospectively examining the key dates, we found that it was by then OGP decided to milk the community dry before ditching. It was right before the industry revolution patch, where I noticed the patch installer skipped at least 3 minor versions of updates, just so that they can sell some ultimate Pay-2-Win-OP gears such as advanced sterncastle.

I believe it was because of this Bad Apple that OGP management lost hope on UWO.

    @OwvinII

Yep that's what other sites mentioned him.
  • OwvinIIOwvinII Posts: 139Member Trainee

You forgot to mention the DDoS attacks that not only adversely affected UWO but also adversely affected other OGPlanet-hosted games (Tales Runner was adversely affected the worst).  Such DDoS attacks were caused by a few notorious hackers/cheaters that might've cause OGPlanet to be bankrupted by both high anti-DDoS measures & loss of playerbases (& probable resultant nonrenewal of game contracts) caused by said DDoS attacks sometime in the past 3.5 years.  Just some possible hypotheses.
  • KatanauwoKatanauwo Posts: 309Member Intermediate
I read from a third party forum that it was a guy in Israel military who launched DDoS attack, while OGP could not sue him due to the difference in jurisdiction.

Hackers are always around. You do not see WoW fall into prey of DDoS, or they probably had, but knew how to fight back.

After all, it is OGP's own incompetence which result in their failure.

If you do a search on glassdoor website, you will see most of OGP staff or former staff complained OGP treated employees badly and did not value talents. They rather preferred underpaying their staff members. And managers were generally abusive to their subordinates.

look at my post with 2 links.

Yup, it was all on founders of OGP ,but I dunno why they wanted to create OGPlanet even they're completely clueless how to manage online games ?. No wonder why they lost contracts for several MMOs while watched OGPlanet sunk into deep sea.

That profile does sound alot like saulcaine.  I honestly hope they don't plan on hiring him, unless they put him on helpdesk.  I know i for one got a 7day ban for posting on forums this very message "If KOEI forces changes why aren't all servers the same.  He removed my post, and bann'd me for 7days saying i was attacking OGP.  No i was just calling him a Liar.  Maybe i should apply for a job, i'm experienced in "Notepad" and "Video Games"   lolol.

playing less than 2 years when OG closed down, i missed all the old rules and changes when they happened. I was a BH by the end of OG and it always bothered me that i couldn't force pirates i hunted into deck battles. I'll be glad to see papaya will address that with the new rules.
