Undecided where to start

I just don't know where to begin my life at in the game. Netherlands looks nice but so does Venice. What are the perks of starting in either of those countries?

    This is purely from OGP experience.

    Venice/Portugal, always the bottom two or three in the European rankings.  However, that also has its perks as if you're going to be an European Privateer, it's easier as you have the most targets.

    England and Dutch, easiest to get to Oxford, as you will have the port permit right away.  Dutch was the strongest the last couple of years at OGP.  English always had strong ESF fleets.

    France, an odd ball, up and down, I admit I don't know too much about French's benefit.  Although Bordeaux is a nice place to be invested in as Wine is a popular Nanban Trade.

    Spain is where the center of commerce/player trading is.  There are a lot of toons that start there, albeit a lot of Alt Toons as well for sale toons.  I'm biased, I like Spain.

    SPAAAAIN!.......u can join anywhere u want....but venice/france/netherlands is going to have little people....so they are gonna develop slower....

    Danhm Franch already has a lot of people starting up there. The Netherlands, I'm not sure. Venice could use more people, it's a lovely city.

    irahaigin I'd say start in Lisbon but I'm very biased :)

    France all the way

    It has 3 different regions for Nanban (South France/Italy, Iberia, and North France).

    You can start to grind Biology from beginning of game because you can report all biology discoveries to famous people around West Mediterranean. It's perfect for players who want Naturalist job.

    France is one of the best Nation for Handicrafts, Luxury, and Alcohol. It's perfect choice for Caribbean traders. Not to mention that you can do sewing since there are several ports around West Mediterranean has Cottons @Tripoli, Wools@ Valencia, Ducks @Montpelier,  Goats @Cagliari, and Sheeps @Sasaari.

    Also, West Mediterranean has crafts, artworks, and fabrics thanks to Genoa, Pisa, and Naples.

    However, you need to unlock Northern Europe for North France ports. Bordeaux is one of busiest port because of wines and handicrafts while the dungeon is the most popular destination even though NPCs are quite tough. Nantes is focus on cooking and may be perfect route between Porto and Nantes for grinding food trading, seasoning, and can make Seafood Pizza.

    You can take carriage between Calais and Marseilles for just 42k while non-france players will have to pay 63k or something like that.It's gateway to Paris, Oxford, and Mercator.

    I am also undecided, I guess I will check if my company is coming back. I told them I wasn't if there was a wipe (many other members said the same) but I love this game too much to throw it away. I will at least give it a go to see what they changed.

    I started in Venice last time was very loyal but went to England to invest for SB. I am leaning toward England but LyonesseJoseph you made some nice points for France!

    Well, my company was in Portugal but I am concerned that they and Venice will be too small to open up Ports down the road.

    @Crismac

    I worry about that too for Portugal but I'm willing to at least give it a try. Lol I've almost always played Portuguese. I played English for about six months, and Venice for about 8 months then Portugal for years and years lol.

    "It has 3 different regions for Nanban (South France/Italy, Iberia, and North France)."

    You mean 3 different specialty regions to buy from and sell in Nanban trade?

    (I say this in hopes I understand specialty goods/regions correctly)

    I like Amsterdam because I'm already on one side of the European trade run. North Europe > Benghazi area and back. Which I was told you get more fame/exp. the further you trade.  Spain/France/Portugal seem right in the middle of that trade route so have to sail more.  Or is it just as much exp/fame trading from Spanish ports to English/Dutch ports?

    For those who are interested in playing as Dutch players, I have made a brief introduction about Dutch in another post.

    @Airhaun

    Sell Nanban goods @ those ports like sell Tanegashima Rifle @Montpelier, Papaer Lantern @Marseilles or any South France/Italy ports,Yunnan Silver @Bordeaux or any Northern France ports.

    Oh, French players can buy Eye Beads @ Naples, Papers->Western Books @Marseilles, Wine @Bordeaux or Marseilles, and Purple Tyrian @Tunis for Nanban. I usually go with crafting trade goods ie Marble Sculptures, Silverwork,

    Also, French players can make Poupelin trees fairly easy because they will have all ingredients around Mediterranean Sea. Also, they can make Tuna Olive Steak Seafood Pizza and Salted Fish with nuts as well after they get books for those.

    Well, you can create toon for Portugal or other Nations for ships.
