notice when your defending an attack from a npc, it doesn't give you any skill points at all...

I used gunfire 4-5 times in a fight and its 0/100 still that's proof enough to me that there is something wrong.

Along with i used assault once it also 0/100 still... and swordplay still only 47/400 which i know i been meleeing for a while...

Perhaps the NPC who attacked you was too low level vs. your levels for you to get any prof? I don't know the whole situation, just thought I'd throw that out there as a posibility.

I've noticed this too...melee skills don't seem to be able to level up even though swordplay and first aid level up. This was not a problem with lower level toons even back in GAMA.

I have a similar issue with the recognition skill. It never works for anything but doing charting for Mercator, and then never gains rank. I have the whole north charted, and it's level 1 with 0/200 points toward level 2.

I have ranked melee skills with no issues.
The recognition skill is the same for me but I just assuming that charting does not give profiency points.

Yes, the Reco skill never got pro(from charting) before the wipe either which I always thought strange. But I guess that is the way they designed it.
