So setting aside all the exploits pirates can use like kamikaze farming and etc. (thanks to CPC for raising awareness to this stuff, I surely didn't know), let's assume that a fight between a merchant and maritime/adventurer type class breaks out in melee combat. My understanding of combat skills is this:
Maritimers get weapon techs
Merchants get item techs
Adventure gets trap techs
In most MMOs, a small party would typically consist of a tank, a healer and several DPS. In my mind a merchant would be ideal as a healer class because of the capability of using item techs, I.E stronger ointments and medicines to heal the group or defensive boosts etc. but this applies to attack items as well doesn't it? Most items I have used in the early game on NPCs either deal huge damage or kill an enemy instantly. Poisons and debuff potions are also especially handy. So then why is it that a merchant cannot acquire merchandise knowledge, acquire some good item techs, and kick rear ends in their way? Or is this a matter of being lazy and not wanting to raise a combat skill, even if it is also a merchant skill?
