Why do you play?

SipiathSipiath Posts: 11Member Beginner
Not necessarily as in "why do you keep coming back", but what do you get out of playing?

Looking at the threads here about alts, and the arguments on both sides seem to boil down to "I get enjoyment from winning."  That's fine -- I'm not about to say that anyone's reason for playing is wrong (well, OK, I'd argue with some reasons) -- but it seems weird to me.  Partly that may be because I'm not actually very good at video games, but that's not the whole story.

For me, I enjoy finishing quests, making a good trade, or just sailing around to see what's where.  It means my progress is slow (I get bored of the grind pretty quickly), but so what?

So why do you play?

    Everyone has their own play style and other people should respect that as I don;t tell a pirate you robbing me makes you a bad person

    @Sipiath

    I'm sure there are some people who play this game because they want to 'win' something. All the people I have ever met just enjoy playing. We set our own targets and challenges and enjoy achieving them.

    I play with two characters simultaneously. Generally they cooperate on tasks. Managing them takes more time and effort than running one character - but I enjoy being busy.

    I don't try to win anything. I'm not driven by the need to be better than other people. I've not even used ANY of my founder's rewards yet. I've just enjoyed slowly exploring Europe again.

    I don't understand why anyone would want to amass billions - that just seems like mindless grinding. I don't like stealing from others so I don't do piracy.

    I like cooperating with friends on joint tasks. And sometimes I just like sociable chat.

    The game gives me a feeling of freedom, I guess that's what i like the most:
    When I feel like charting, I do so,
    When I feel like doing maritime quests, I do so.
    When I feel like making discoveries, I do so.
    When I feel like short distance trading, I do so.
    When I feel like long distance trading, I do so.
    ... helping newbies out, trying dungeons, shipwrecks, land-battle, sailing around, visiting city's, lvling aides, collecting, crafting, sewing,... I do whatever I want and I have that wide range of things to do that most of the time I can't even choose my priorities.
    And all of that comes with a free package of nice ppl to talk to from all over the world. Also there ain't a time pressure if you don't want so.
    And yes, there are lesser enjoyable parts also but I take them as they are.

    It is just the mixture of all those aspects put in a historical and educative story.

    I play for the unique experience UWO had to offer, but.... it no longer offers that experience. I like the idea of being a unique individual in the game world.

    There's no chance of being unique in this game without shooting yourself in the foot. 7 years ago, you could get high level casting and be among one of the unique, high end weapon makers in the game. Now, 90% of the players know the routine and that's what it's become to them - routine. Everyone is grinding the same skills, to hurry up and be just like everyone else.

    The "Race to 60" event and the 200% exp bonus are all a part of this. Everyone's racing to get the exact same skills as each other and most are simply rebuilding the characters they used to have. It just shows that Papaya never reset the servers for the benefit of the game, since they've changed virtually nothing in doing so.

    I play because I enjoy playing, and running 2 toons at the same time allows me to do more things than just one. The game would be extremely limited if you could only use one toon, like being allowed only to listen to a TV show when you're used to watching it also. Those who don't use alts have no idea what they're talking about or how it would screw things up for people who do if you could only have one log in at a time. I guess they don't care either as long as they get their way. I'm not that selfish, I think everyone should be allowed to play however they enjoy it best.

    @Lerxst

    You play it because it USED TO BE  unique?

    You give just a bunch of reasons for not playing the game (again).

    If it's so bad, why are you still here? Do you just like complaining?

    And like, it bothers you so much you are willing to pay exorbitant prices for the stuff THEY DON'T WANT?

    It makes more sense to not care about it.

    I disagree with the "everyone doing the same" statement because of the lv60 race.

    First you could push for top10 to adv/trade/maritime, so 3 different things. Then there are options on how to do it, like I did a couple of spice trades for trade 60... but ended up finishing most of it with dungeons, which required a waaaay different approach and skill grind.

    After it then people will do their thing, some will go full crafter, full adventure, pirate/bh, etc etc.

    Great question!
    I think I enjoy the game because it can be played at one's own pace. I don't feel it's fast and intense like a FPS game. You can sit and play for 5 minutes or 5 days, there is no pressure to be at a certain point at any time.

    I play because you don't need to be competitive in this game. You can play at your own pace and it won't matter if you miss events. You can resume where you left off even after a long hiatus.

    It's about winning, only not against other players. It's having objectives so the winning is when I achieve one of them. If I'm not the richest, don't have the most ducats and have a difficult time defeating a barca, meeting my goals is satisfying enough.

    Like before the wipe I got all the production skills to R16 (not alchemy.) I didn't actually make many things other than one special outfit and my own vigor food, yet it was nice to know if I needed something, I could produce it - except for Royal Navy recipes since I didn't have points for that. These were the kind of things I considering - winning.

    Now I don't have as much time to play, so I'm trying to set more modest goals. Maybe catch the 3 Paraguay river fish (only got 2 of them last time.)

    Well, I played Uncharted Waters 2 for 10 years or so, on and off, 5-20 years ago. Then wanted to play this game since it was out, but only now (this summer) got to it, understanding it might die before I finally actually play it. Just to get a continuation. The storylines, the exploration... Like a cheaper alternative to traveling. Possibly not the best choice, objectively, but considering the past experience with this series... I'm not here for the multiplayer part. However if I had people within physical reach to play this game together with, I guess I wouldn't mind to die of old age playing this game. :) I actually started with a friend, who opted out in a couple of weeks. Then another friend tried but couldn't take the complexity...

    It used to be a good game for the family to play together. Now it's just me because ogp listened to crybabies and limited IP's

    That's because I am fan of Uncharted Waters since 1990's.

    Sailing around the world
    do trading
    do crafting
    build my own ships
    investments
    grinding skills
    obtain jobs
    make discoveries
    do cat n' mouse chase against pirates

    That's pretty much what I am doing. Well, I admit that I am no fan of dungeons ,but I will go there for discoveries and acquire items ie POs.

    @VictoriasSecret, why don't you buy a vpn? It's like 3$/month.

    I don't "win", because there is no such thing. There is no end in sight, therefore no win or lose. I play an alt because I like to do it all, based on my mood. You can't do everything on 1 character, because you only get so many skill slots. I enjoy battle...sometimes....trade...sometimes....adventure....sometimes....but I always like to do something.

    ...and now I'm done with these forums because it's just a whine fest for things they can do themselves...but are to lazy to do. Yes it takes time and effort to use more than 1 toon.
