Time is Precious (or not)

So far the only benefit of starting over is being reminded of the nightmares in this game. When a new player quits before finishing school, it just means UWO is probably not a game they enjoy. When a player graduates, has made some progress on levels (say 30 and above) and skills, they've shown they like the premise of the game, yet they still give up on it.

One reason I can think of is the long voyages required to continue progress. When a player does something like the Rapa Nui chain quest, they accept the need for several long voyages across the Pacific. There's really no way the game can make it possible to discover without sailing there - I suppose the quest could be in Lima, but Jakarta is fine as long as there's a discovery to be made.

What's nightmarish is the extra sailing for Imperial Quests. You sail over to take a quest to open an area. You return to the NPC that gives you the quest, only to find out you have to sail home before turning your attention to the next area to open. When you're ready for the canals, you learn you have to make a long voyage to discover the city on the far side of the canal before they'll allow you to do the Imperial Quest to open it.

Even with unlimited time to play it's one of those moments where you have to question whether it's worth continuing. For those who try to play as often as they can, but have to work it into real life commitments, it may explain why the game loses people who have shown a strong interest in the game.

Yes, I am at that point now, for the second time. I will continue doing my EU grinds for awhile until I can decide if it's worth sailing off to Rio, which will be to commit hours of future play to Imperials Quests. So that's the problem. A solution might be:

NPCs that give the IQs are supposed to be representing their country - let them finalize the successful completion of the quest.

For the canals, if requiring only 1 city to be discovered is too easy, allow the IQ that travels to the far side of the canal available without having already discovered the city - you still stick the player with a long voyage, but without the demotivating factor of having to make the trip twice.

NM, OGP and even Koei seemed to expect everyone to devote entire days to this game, and I'm sure we all wish it was possible. My hope is PP will convince Koei to give more thought to those who can't devote as much time as they might wish they could. After all, they finally made the school fleet quest optional to help those who are less social in their play style, why not help those who don't have an abundance of time.

Please let's not start asking for short cuts to make the game go faster or more convenient.  I think we all understand the value of time but this slow, laid back, type of game play is the very essence of UWO.  There is a realistic feel to UWO in that although some of its mechanics come across as time consuming, once the task has been completed, it is very gratifying.

This catering to the casual player mindset type of gaming is currently plaguing the game industry. Everyone wants to grind to top levels as fast as possible. We are getting to the point, if not there already, where its hard to find any type of challenge in any game any more.  The journey means nothing anymore.  Getting to the top of any level, profession or achievement, should take effort, and those players who achieve these mile stones should be acknowledged for the effort exerted.  UWO still has that sense of achievement.  Let's not ruin it.

Koei is looking after some "relaxation". For exemple in Order of the Price we will have the necessary fame to get port permit cutted by half and SB will be called Custom Shipbuilding and even at Rank 1 we would be able to build a Clipper or a First Class Vaisseau however those rank 1 they wouldn't be able to tweak ship with best performances like a rank 20 but i think with that Update we will be able to lvl up SB more faster, maybe...

http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/dol/topics_cms/update/6292.html (use chrome or google page translator if don't know japanese, is what i do =p )

And at some point in The Age of Revolution (that we should already be but for some reason Papaya's cutted this content's) we where able to do Mercator Chart without need to do Intermediary School and Minos Palace quest were facilitated to new player be able to them, but this kind of updates are not present right now.

About Suez, new player just need some veterans to help them or be smart to plan their travel so they don't go to Suez and and immediatly go back to Europe because this would be really time consuming.

About quests, i really agree that Koei or whoever can tweak quests and their locations shoulded put quests at local level. If we are explorers and since this game part from the premise that us, the western people, are discovering things so we mostly heard about them in local. Even considering that we have historical literature that talk about far east like The Travels of Marco Polo, most of the discoverys was made after reaching this places with local's telling us about it. So please papaya if if you can do that remove discovery's that are done too far from their Discovery locations, like Rapa Nui, but there are plenty of them, like Phanton under blue sky (biology from Alexandria> Chongqing).

I loved how Uncharted: New Horizons (Snes) played the adventure part of the game, - we reach the place, see that new thing and then only reported to a noble of you choice when you wanted, and you could find all discoverys before need report anything. And it's more realistic, because we don't hears about a very rare and never found before insect in the middle of China. Darvin didn't heard about those many animals that he categorized and reported, he met than because he as looking at the right place at right time. No one in London said to him that in Galápagos had toons of animals that evolved to fit their necessity and that islands... but I already talked too much XD
