Oar Shot

As we know, the proliferation of galley-style pirate vessels consumes UWO despite the fact that these ships would actually sink in open waters. Along with a high level of rowing skill, this allows players to pilot ships in waters they should not be able to sail in and have a huge advantage in battle. This creates an almost unfair advantage to non-rowing/non-galley ships. (Don't worry, this isn't a "whining" post.) I think giving a little bit of defense toward those players can allow them to sail without the total fear and complete hopelessness of battling a galley full of soldiers on the high seas. Therefore, I suggest a new type of cannon shot called "Oar Shot." This cannon can be equipped in small numbers (2-8 would be a good number) that does much like smoke shot in that it does little to no damage but slows the galley ship by damaging the oars. I know that this can also be accomplished by the judicious use of Grape Shot cannons but, really, how often can a non-rowing trade vessel shoot before a massive galley boards them? Once? Maybe? This cannon-type would add a layer of defense to otherwise defenseless trade ships and level the playing field just a little bit against the galleys that somehow sail the seven seas.
