Why I pirate

HelloAllHelloAll Posts: 701Member Intermediate
So with all the discussion recently on pvp and pirating I noticed one of the members (I think Lefox) say it was interesting to see it from a pirates perspective.

So I though I’d explain why I pirate and what I get out of it.

So last server I was mainly a trader and when I first set out beyond safe waters I was a mega noob, but knew pirates existed and was afraid of them.

Then one day one swooped in on me in a big SNG it was shakiri I think and I crapped myself.

After that every time I went out I was scared it would happen again, not because of what I could lose but just because the sight of that red/orange name in a big fast ship was kinda intimidating....but I loved that buzz, the risk, the danger. In time I got a very fast ship with IH and before most pirates could catch me I was gone.
And the game got boring.

So I thought well why don’t I pirate too, so i did, and the buzz returned.

So for me it’s not about stealing from you, it’s catching you and defeating you.

I’ve given so much stuff back already and have had more pm’s thanking me than I have had raging at me

Everyone now and then I will keep stuff otherwise I will have no money, but if someone is going toward ea with goods to trade I will always offer it back, because we all know how much that effects the exchange rate.

But for me I love deep sea pirating, picking a path and sticking with it and seeing if I catch or pass someone. All my plunders have been far away from port.

It’s that buzz of strategically picking a route and sticking with it hoping your gamble pays off.

A few days ago I did this then after 15 mins I saw a spec in the distance it was a schooner and TLG that had big the same route as me and I caught it. For me that’s a buzz.

Or even more so when I pass a ship coming toward me at high speed.
He’s seen me, I’ve seen him...he’s thinking oh crap but I bet he can’t catch me...I turn around thinking oh crap, I hope i can catch him..and the chase is on, such a buzz.
Especially when u see them getting closer and closer and we all know at that point resistance is futile :p

But also the massive risks of pirating. I’m always on the search, so when I offer to fleet someone who I have plundered or exchange items at see to give them things back I need to circle them, stopping is too risky. But at this point I’ve lost speed and can’t see whats going on around me as well so I’m at fear of a BH appear and getting me while I’m unaware...but again it’s such a buzz.

I suggest give it a go :)

I don't think people should fear pirates, maybe I'm more of a relaxed player that just enjoys the game and maybe when I been hit by pirates I not lost to much?

But for myself, if I get attacked I just think it's part of the game, it's fun trying to avoid pirates as I'm sure it's fun for pirates to hunt (Tom and Jerry cartoons spring to mind)

As for my shakiri experience, the last time I got attacked by him/her was in OGP in the carib, 10-15 dura hits at a time lol. If only I had my cannons with me haha.

In some ways I do think the game is spoilt by pirates in general however I feel it's part of the game that Koei released and you just got to play smart. Plan ahead, think about the pinch points, maybe take a longer route to avoid the pinch points? I think thats what us non pirate players have to do.

Can we at least agree to hate these forums that don't let you quote or edit. And btw I still get all the breast milk I want- even to this day. I just shout up from the basement for Mom to bring be down more hot pockets and whip out a milk bag.

Oh yeah, back to the point. My suggestion for anyone who hasn't pirated, is to make a separate pirate character, and try it out. This game is much more enjoyable with a dedicated trader/adv/maritime/pirate. You can combine maritime and pirate, but it's a huge hassle to switch between filibuster and any other job, plus the equipment, ships, and gear are all very different if you are "doing it right".

I agree that there is definitely some adrenaline involved whenever a pirate attacks me in my clipper. Most of it involves trying to hold out for a few seconds while my alt in a CFCV who was following behind tries to catch up in time to send the offender to davy jones locker room. I'm getting them about half the time now, but I'm working on it.

I've been playing the game for about 18 months (although I don't do much in the summer for 6 months for work reasons).

I started UWO for the trade element, then got interested in the ADV.

I haven't got time to do maritime as well. There's so much else to do.

There are not enough skill slots to acquire the necessary maritime skills on my trade and ADV characters.

And the maritimers in the maritime events don't seem the types to welcome players who just want to try it out, or who haven't got the time to max those skills.

May be in a couple of years when I want to try something new, I will start a dedicated maritime character.

If I did, yeah I'd give pirating a try. I would like the challenge of the hunt. I'd want to play it in role like Culvern does.

I don't see pirating as true PvP. If I want some PVP I play CS-GO. I kind of shrink back from doing PvP here because the skill element is swamped by the gear. If I did pirating then for me it would be all about the hunt and of course being hunted and outwitting the BHS.

Even if you don't do much maritime, I would say you need to be at least to level 50 in battle to have a well rounded character. Fortunately that's pretty easy to do with the battle reports.

As I've stated, maritime battle for me is impossible due to medical reasons. Any battle levels I'll get past 25-ish from doing schools with AOS will be from dungeons and most of that just by being in fleet. I did have all the cannon battle skills r12+ base on Cullum on GAMA, and was fair to middlin' at it. eBut never again, it stresses me way to much. HelloAll, if you follow Culvern's example as a pirate, you'll do well, although that player is a bit of a smart@$$  at times xD

Wes "well-rounded" is a bit subjective. If I like crafting and I've got limited time, then achieving 10/10/10 in casting, handi and sewing looks pretty well-rounded.

Besides, spamming BRs is like spamming Nanban. You can get to 60 easily enough, but does it mean you know anything?

It is true, I am a smartass. :)
Too many people on here have no sense of humor or are very uptight.
People need to relax and have some fun.

It's better to be at 60 and know nothing than to be at 20 and know nothing. But I think I do pick up a few things here and there, and BR's will also bring up skills like gunnery, accuracy and reloading.

Reloading is a skill only needed or used while grinding cannon skills and dropped afterwards.
