Game crashing since update

I have no problem loading the game or installing it but since the update I have a real problem with it crashing.
It’s becomes pixelated, then looks a bit laggy and then the screen will freeze completely and I get the windows message “program not responding” after a few seconds the game will then shut down completely.
It happens maybe 5 times per hour, often leaving my toon still sailing at sea. And as a pirate I’m expecting to come back to a white flag soon and a BH circling me.
It didn’t do it before the update and my windows 10 is fully up to date.
Once it happens it takes me a good minute or 2 to log back in because it seems to startup the game slowly and then I have to go through the sign in process again.
With me being a pirate in game it’s irritating because obviously with any pvp this leaves me defenceless.
Yesterday I spent 30 mins until I saw my first trader without a blue flag and then as I got close it happened. By the time I logged in again he was long gone.
