why can't you take trade goods through the canals?

I mean, what the hell is a canal for anyway? I don't remember in my history classes that ships have to stop before they enter the panama canal and offload all their cargo (personal items excepted of course). I just don't understand why this is happening, did someone accidentally hit no instead of yes when they were coding this part of the game? Did GM Coolbreeze do it? What the problem is??
May the winds blow you well

i always found that a little strange as well about this game. You can take trade goods across land though Paris but not along the water though a canal? weird. I mean that is what the canals were made for lol. I'm guessing they restricted them because there was some unbalancing factor during the early game testing days they found. I think they should've at least allowed limited goods though them like the Paris route and now the new train across NA.

The "no trade goods allowed while going through canal" rule has been there since day 1 and is also applied on the Asian servers as well, so it's not a coolwind thing. I guess it would make some sense back then (despite that the historical purpose of the canals was/is to allow the easier transportation of goods) as it would make trading and doing, say, pepper runs from India a little too quick and easy. But in this age where you CAN take goods while taking the North American train or using the Calais - Paris route, it makes it seem a bit odd. I would suggest that players could, like the train and carriage, carry a limited number of goods and/or charge an extra fee based on the value of them.

Also noteworthy is there are gems that are acquired from Atlantis that granted special powers from the Greek gods. One of them, from Poseidon I think, allowed you to carry up to 1000 goods through the canals, which can be upped to 2000 with an increased rank. However, until Atlantis comes back, there's no way to get those ATM...

taking goods through canals is simply too OP, except for maybe 100 goods max. Even then however you could just add goods to aide bazaar in suez, go back to cairo, take 100 more goods off alts, and repeat. We have 3x multi fleets as it is, we don't need much quicker routes EA-suez-cairo-EU with 8k+ trade goods.

Could be fun for pirates for the Suez, what with the red sea they can basicly block the zone and therefore charge for safe passage. Could be definatly intresting.

Not really Fields, as usual everyone would just use blue flags.
Koei might as well just make transporting nanban goods instant and have no limit to cargo space. No one will have to sail at all. That is what most want for the game it seems anyways.

    It’s a strange one.
As regards not wanting to allow nanban to be brought back to EU so easily well I get that. But they keep making it easier and easier to become rich by allowing 3 toons to fleet and with the clermonts now available nanban runs are even more profitable. So they don’t seem too concerned with people making big cash fast.

Maybe it could be a perk for Otto players that they can use the Suez Canal and bring goods through.

But it is what it is I guess.

Other than for being a pirate there really seems no benefit to being Otto long term other than to invest. The disguise is easy enough to buy.
