Post graduate Company?

I was thinking of ways to grow server pop, and thought one good place to start might be with new player retention. To that end, once players graduate from school chat, they lose the 100 person chat room that was able to guide them through many of this games more intricate aspects. Perhaps a company based in Seville could specifically cater to players that are done with the academy, need other people around their level, and also still need the advice of veteran players. If a handful of the more active Companies could insert 10 or so vet players with varying expertise, it might recreate the benefits of school chat.

Or perhaps something like this already exists? And I don't just mean a company that allows new players, I mean a company that is as active as school chat and contains a handful of vets- like school chat.

Honestly VS I think you should do it. Its your idea its your baby do it.  Maybe call it uwo college or UWO Graduate School where people are told about more advanced stuff. You can even grade their performance and offer them a diploma as verification they know what they doing…

    Sounds cool

I'm still trying to get someone to join my colony. I've got printer, paymaster, market with gems and gold/silver, armour, etc, and a shipyard 3 all to myself right now. Except for my alts that is.
May the winds blow you well

Maybe Papaya could create a new chat area called "UWO help" or something similar where players of any level can ask questions if they need help, and more experienced, knowledgeable players can help them out and give advice. World and school chat can still be used for this, but UWO help would be especially created for this purpose, and any general non-UWO chat would be discouraged and directed elsewhere for that. This would be most helpful for new players that have graduated from school, but still need help with the game. And school players can go there too if they want help from, again, more experienced, knowledgeable players. This is useful since Papaya doesn't seem interested in continuing with the Firstmate program from OGplanet.

World chat is not that active really, it is pretty easy to ask for help there.
Just need the people willing to speak up and help.
I only see very few regular names offer help.
I’m a noob myself but I still help the less experienced when I have chance.

I appreciate the ops idea but I think just making new players aware they can join a company and making them feel welcome is the best thing to do.

I’m pretty sure all companies would help there members, we just need to make sure any new players are aware about companies.

I think it’s likely the ones that are not asking for help in world chat and not in a company are the type that probably prefer to keep it that what.

Isn't that the purpose of having world chat?

I agree with Crazyhunter that the purpose for world chat should be for helping people.   It could be that some new players might be put off or intimidated by the handful of immature twits that have been having the same ridiculous nondiscussion for months accusing each other of being other people from Gama.  I often see people's questions getting buried in the inane chatter.  I do PM them if I know the answer but no doubt tons get missed.

School is the first place new and returning players find themselves, so it ought to be the best possible
environment for getting help. Which is why they really should restore the firstmate program. You'd be surprised how many people don't know how to change chat channels, or would find asking questions
in World Chat too intimidating. And it opens them up to certain...unhelpful people too, let's call it.

Normally, people would spend enough time in school to pick up the basics, but too many people these days want to fast-track to level 40+ and they miss out on the true experience of the game, as well as potentially many friends they could have made from school.

There is something to be said for graduating from school and then sort of finding your own way. Exploring and getting lost are part of the fun in such a game. Of course, if people really do get stuck or want more info on particular things, then it should be available to them.

I think the idea was to find yourself in a good company post-school, but that's not always sufficient. And graduating from intermediate school thrusts students in to companies at random, often including completely dead ones. So a /help channel could work. But first they would need to fix this persistent bug of having people on your block list interfering with the World channels.

Thanks for the encouragement CPC, but my concern is if I jumped straight into this, and didn't get a reasonable amount of support from the vet community, I would become overwhelmed and exhausted.
In a perfect world, there would be a way for vets to reenter school chat. Then, for example, I could offer open spots when I run dungeons. Or open spots in a nanban trip, or a BR grind. And just answer questions randomly when I'm paying attention to chat. I think a lot of us like to help, but don't want to be saddled with a full time job.

The reason general world chat fails, is because most vets hang out in merchant chat. We don't get yelled out for talking about prices, WTS & WTB. In between we joke around a lot- it's really a great community for seasoned players. But a new or mid level player will get intimidated by all the acronyms and probably not understand a lot of the more technical SB discussions. Plus sometimes it gets pretty heavy with WTS/WTB spam and questions are missed.

Ferro, you hit the nail on the head with a lot of the issues. People fast track out of school chat quite often, and then get placed in nearly dead companies or alt companies. Then they feel alone, bored and inclined to move on to a different game.

I'll keeping thinking about this. Maybe just starting a company that caters to school grads and vets who want to help (on alts if needed) is the answer. I'm just brain storming atm, thanks for all the ideas, and feel free to add more.

the reason why many people want to fast track to high lvls & skill ranks is that we already went throught all the grind once, only to lose it to a wipe

    Brilliant ideas in this topic.

Slightly off topic however, Catch XXII in Lisbon will gladly accept people that are 20/20/20 ish and no plans for piracy (We are a non pirate company).

We have on average 5 or so players on at any one time and many vets that can help new players out.

On what Blake said about a help chat room, I agree that would be a good idea the only thing I would say is perhaps allowing CAs to kick/mute players from the help chat as I can imagine it could get trolled a lot by some people or used for general gosip.

I have such limited knowledge in so many aspects of this game. I always do try to answer any question that I can.
Letting people know about websites like ivyro is a huge help to them.

No pirates allowed? Do you allow 'cargo reallocation specialists' or 'customs agent's?
I board ship all the time and confiscate contriban cargo bound for Europe. If Nanban goods were not illegal you would not have to bribe all the Asian officials to start getting it. :)

    'cargo reallocation specialist'

If only that would fit in a status message.
