Cannon or Melee, what do you prefer?

SpooklesSpookles Posts: 287Member Intermediate
I just had such a great experience melee'ing someone with equal stats.

It was great, remembered me why I love melee fights so much.
I guess it's about the gambling, trying to figure out what the other person would do, when you choose right you get that dopamine rush and when you fail you're gonna have to try and figure out how to come back.
I love it, I'd do melee fights over cannon any day of the week (considering the stats are somewhat equal)

What do you prefer and why?

I prefer to sink people with cannons, while my crew of 329 relaxes in their bunks.

I always prefer to hit things from a distance weather it's cannons, bows, guns, you get it.

@CrzyPsycoChick Don't get me wrong, i love the idea of being able to do deck now! Back on OGP, i couldn't deck when i BH'd since it had to be mutual, and i spend A LOT of time doing land battle back then hehe. But here i'm looking forward to getting into that again now that it can be forced. I tried it out the other night on a pirate and won. But we'll see, i still have a way's yet to get back to my old melee/land skills here, atleast this time around i know how to build a character better <3

Melee. I find cannon fights boring

Plus I’m so lazy I never use mouse. I just have a laptop on my knee and use the touch pad, did it that way for all my pirating and fighting BH lol. So melee is easier for using no mouse xD

if that's the case, then why go sailing? you might as well just do land duels lol

cannons all the way melee is a simple guess the card mini game greatly dampened by UWC equip and Surgery so there is no fun to be had.

if i wanted to show off my wallet size i would rather have a fancy dinner somewhere.

and land battle in this game is rudimentary if i wanted to stab someone with a sword i would be in Skyrim.

I'd go with cannons ,but all 3 are good anyway.
  • CulvernCulvern Posts: 646Member Intermediate
In a 1 vs 1 fight I would be happy in melee, in most fleet fights it's usually pointless unless the opposing side fails to use surgery properly to save teammates.
The ship I am in greatly affects how I approach a battle though.

My answer is yes...I prefer melee, shooting cannons, and db. :D

I'm only limited by my willpower to regrind my skills again.

I feel the same as Culvern. 1v1 melee fights are fun. In fleet battles, especially 3v3 and more, you won't kill many in melee. Mostly you can use melee to set up a fleetmate for a crit when the enemy retreats or to stop admiral from retreating the ring.

I am still a noob in land battle, but i find it interesting. I wish there was more incentive to learn it such as attacking other players at landing or even in lawless ports lol but that's wishful thinking as koei never had plans to introduce this.

Psst! If I ever try to pirate any of you, take me to deck. That is where my skills lack the most.

maybe it's 'luck' for YOU, but for someone who actually knows what they are doing it takes far more skill to be an effective melee'er than cannon sniper. You need to know how to anticipate your opponent's moves to counter depending on the situation, as well as techniques to keep them from retreating. Also it takes great skill to be able to avoid those 'parked' cannon ships from doing crits when you come out of melee. As a sniper you just sit out by the ring and only really need to fend off 1-2 ships at a time that pursue you but when you are a 'tank' melee'er you are in the middle of battle and have to usually fend off 4-6 ships targeting you at the same time, that takes far more skill. Plenty of times i've gone up against ships with more crew and stats than me but i've still come out winning the battle! That had nothing to do with 'guessing' it has to do with knowing how to melee effectively as well as knowing my opponent (most times) and how they tend to play *thank you Sun Tzu*
Also your argument about UWC advantage is pretty weak since there's nothing in the uwc shop that you can't get in game buy shouting WTB/WTH to other players. You might also find it interesting (or not) that no one has really complained about OP worn gear which is pretty common, HOWEVER there's been plenty of people going off about the OP MGHP's which are pretty rare.
True surgery makes a HUGE difference in group battles, but given enough time you can still overwhelm your opponent in melee even with his fleet spamming surgery (if you know how). When you are in a group battle though, while you are in melee it's up to your allies to be doing their part keeping opponent ships to busy to be able to surg. In a group game it's always the tanker's that are the greater threat which is why they take the most attention in battle. A 1v1 it doesn't matter anyways, then it's just your skill against them so you have more control over the situation if you are good at melee fighting.

Also, i like melee because you can set yourself up to be quite OP just from in game knowledge. Refined melee+obstruction+restriction makes it so hard for other player to get away from you especially if you are a pirate or melee specialist. Obstruction can also block smoke bomb of retreat (item that supposedly guarantees escape from melee) . In 1v1s these added bonuses go a long way!

I do have all the three elements (naval, melee battle and deck battle), although my specialization would lie on the last two.

Unlike cannon fire battles, melee battle/deck gives considerable tension when doing it. Not to mention in regular pvp you may put your money, cargo and eventually your equipment under stake which makes it very exciting.

Needless to say, I do agree partly to players who thinks it is a rock-paper-scissors in melee. However, you've to bear in mind that certain ship skills, aide skills, and even melee items can play a role which can have significant influence in 1 vs 1 or team battles.

I do hear some talk out regarding that someone with OP melee status are unbeatable... I do have to disagree with that. Those players, including myself, are far from being invincible and the reason is that there are counter measures that you can think of.

For instant: in 1 vs 1 battle, use heavy bombing and try to find the right moment to hit him/her from the front or behind (melee fans tends to expose is easily or when you crash each other) or during melee, try to bring their durability down through loaded explosives, training bomb etc. when their durability is low enough. Moreover, you can even easily survive team battles since you get surged and all of this may only fail if you don't know how to raise your melee stats (it does not have to be that great).

The only thing that I do wish is that they add an item (similar as white smoke bomb) that lowers your opponent defense in greater ratio than their "tactic" skill effect. It makes practically impossible to overwhelm a player with Welcome Melee Battle whenever they spam out "Tactic" skill. Again, that melee item would be also obstruct-able, which would make hand to hand combat more exciting.

That is all my opinion that I wish to share so far. ^^

    Kind Regards,
