Need opinions on "tribute exploit"

VeclordVeclord Posts: 99Member Beginner
I don't want to name too many names since I think the important thing to focus on is potentially game breaking mechanics that we can only hope get some attention and are worked on being fixed at some point. It goes like this:

Yesterday a pirate was confronted by a bounty hunter and during the skirmish, I guess he realized he couldn't win. So the pirate simply...uses tribute goods? This ends the battle and caused the bounty hunter to go "yellow" for privateer status. The bounty hunter apparently got really pissed about this and quit the game.

So what's the run with this thing? Does this mean any bounty hunter that gets sent after you can simply be warded off by tributes the same way a trader what do to ward off a pirate threat, or is something else going on here? I just want to be educated on the information in case we heard this scenario wrong.

I'm really curious who this BH was since there aren't that many.

Sounds like a bad bug. But also kinda makes me laugh.

I said in world chat a few days ago that if BH had the same restrictions as pirates and weren’t ‘safe’ in safe waters then most of them would be white!

Although that is off topic and this bug does need to be fixed.

It's true, there's a lot of things spiraling further out of control and I honestly don't know if Koei even knows it's going on or even cares. It's important to maintain a balance but in a game like this I don't much envy the people tasked with the decision making. Nonetheless, the fact still is there are nowhere near as many pirates as there should be, nor BH or even players in general. Things like this are a factor in that even if people don't like hearing about it.

And let's not forget pirates using "spotter alts". Been hearing about that since ESF. I'll say the same thing I said in World as well: it's a hilarious double standard that I just can't get over. Traders nanban to hell and back and adventure map farming with alts? Let it be. Pirates using alts? BAN THE ALTS!!!!!!!

Discussed this with a CA, a pirate CANNOT use tributes, however. If he is fleeted with a white it is possible that the white player uses tributes. Now this is one hell of a brainfart.

If that white was the admiral the game thinks the BH killed the white name. Thus making the BH a pirate.

The same as me (I'm a Venetian), a venetian can attack other venetians without going red. But only if the venetian is not the admiral.

This is what happened I think, considering you used question marks you do not seem to know the full picture either. But this is what I and the CA thinks.
The CA forwarded it to a GM though, just to be sure.

I didn't see it happen first hand. A pirate told the story in world chat and another person that watched it happen confirmed and everyone laughed to each other about it. No one denied or said it wasn't possible for him to do what he did, so I figured posting here would clarify exactly what happened so others with more experience and share while the rest of us can be warned should they choose to pursue a bounty hunting profession.

Vec, are you confused about the story that I (Wsp) talked about a few days ago?

First off, he didn't quit, he just got really mad and calls me names on world chat whenever he sees me.

What really happened, was that we were both white names and he attacked me in black sea (hostile waters).  I was no match for him (*giggles) and thus used a tribute to turn him orange.

As boo mentioned, pirates cannot use tribute.  BHs cannot turn orange unless they attack white names, other BHs and they successfully win or use tribute.

Please do not spread false rumours about a tribute exploit! thanks!

In all fairness, no one mentioned the incident occurred with one of your alts. It would be dumb to assume, but that's why I asked a question here instead of spreading false rumors. We'll stick with the spotter alts instead.

But now that's settled, we should celebrate Wsp. How does a thanksgiving feast sound!?

Spotter alts are not the issue - pirates lurking offline suddenly appearing at speed on top of prey is.

This is rather amusing, but it brings up a point of confusion for me, and I assume, other people. What are these different levels of piracy and different name colors? Is there a guide to know exactly what means what, and what you have to do to get a certain color?

White - Trader, Adventurer or Martitimer that only attacks NPCs/fleets with no flag. I do not know if a white name can attack a pirate (red) without gaining enmity from that nation but I believe the answer is no.

Orange - Privateers. Commits acts of piracy to all nations EXCEPT their own. This is what Wsp plays when he pirates people. I thought he used tributes on a BH (blue) but as he so joyfully informed me, this was incorrect.

Red - Pirates. They attack anyone without regard to national relations, and sometimes each other depending on how the conversation between them on who has larger genitals and who banged whos mother last night is going.

Blue - Bounty Hunters. They get paid to attack Red and possibly Orange (?).

Unless I'm wrong again, what I learned from this thread is that only players who are white named can use tributes to end a battle.

    Addition:

    White attacking Red becomes Blue.
White attacking Orange becomes Blue if the Orange player is of a different nation than the White. If they are the same nation the White will turn Red.

Orange becomes Red if he kills a Blue or White of his own nation.

Red & Orange will turn White if loses enough notoriety.
Red will turn Orange if he loses enough enmity with his own nation.
Red will never turn Blue. (Unless he goes white first)

Blue gets rewarded for killing Red players & Orange players that are not his nation.
Blue will turn Red if he kills a player of his own nation, regardless if he was White or Orange.
Blue will turn Orange if he kills a white that is not his own nation.

If I wouldn't be grinding on ghosts I would've made an image with arrows that asks
Are you white? Yes go here, no go there. Sorry for that. Hope this helps though

    Addition:

There is an invisible barrier that stops blues from leaving safe waters :p

    @boo, that's not correct.

A white named player attacking a privateer of the same nation turns BLUE when they win, not RED.  I tested this with my friend who is also dutch.

I assume the same occurs for when a BLUE name attacks a privateer of the same nation.

TBH, i believe koei should change it to what u mentioned above.

It never makes sense that a BH from the same nation can attack a privateer.
  • WesDoobnerWesDoobner Posts: 761Member Intermediate
So if you're currently white, and want to start attacking flagged NPC's of other nations, that would make you a privateer (orange)?
May the winds blow you well

No attacking NPCs keeps you white, however your enmity with the nation attacking will climb. So you will have to pay to enter ports and get all the bad sides of a pirate, just not a colored name.

    TIP AVOID FRENCH NPCS
You cant go through Paris anymore if you're in a bad relationship wtth them.
