Min/Max Cargo Size?

kadamskadams Posts: 59Member Beginner
Players in game say the no penalty cargo size effects ship speed and gvo.gamedb confirms it's true.

What I haven't found (it's probably out there somewhere) is how significant the effect is between minimum and maximum no penalty range. As an adventuring merchant, if it's like 5%, I wouldn't hesitate to go with the maximum, but if it's more like 10%, then it becomes a tough decision, or a time to buy a 2nd ship.

This perplexed me too at one point but I'll try to explain as best as I can…

Min cargo aka -25% doesn't give a boost to speed but it does give a boost to acceleration something like 5%

Max cargo aka +25% doesn't give a boost to acceleration or top speed just more cargo range.

NOT factoring in sail and WR Penalty from modding outside effective range which you can mod to remove.

Now here is where it gets interesting speed boost is determined by currently USED cargo and the higher the amount of used cargo of your max the more of a speed penalty you will face. I'll give an example.

25 used cargo out 200 total offers a slight loss of speed as not much of the total cargo is used
    Vs.
190 used cargo out of 200 offers a large loss of speed as most of the cargo space is in use

With this said when you build a ship with more cargo you actually can INCREASE your speed when you carry more cargo as you aren't as filled to capacity ie. 100 used out 200  is the exact same speed penalty as 500 used out of 1000.  You get what I mean?

Higher WR also lessens the penalty when more cargo  is used.

So basically what im saying if you build  a -25% for the accel boost but you're cargo is mostly used up it will still hurt your top speed. Hence why you see pirates using survival skill with their -25% builds as they dont have to waste cargo on their speed mod builds thus incurring no speed penalty to catch prey and traders with more cargo to haul more cargo with less of a speed penalty.

Sorry for the long winded answer just wanted to paint the entire picture.

Thank you very much. It wasn't really such a long winded answer since it provided all the factors. Way better to have more information than less when it comes to doing anything in UWO.

Plus now I know minimum cargo isn't worth having on adventure merchant ship - a 5% acceleration won't help much when a pirate rowboat is waiting.

Oh will my ship get slow down if my aide's ship carries all trade goods or supplies ?. I know fleet will slow down admiral if members have load of trade goods even if I don't carry any supplies or trade goods.

Aide cargo & your cargo are counted together

I was curious to see if CPC was correct so I did a test; Me and my alt both sailed in a Large Galleon (their not the fastest ships, but hey, this is a test). One was modded with min cargo (460) and the other in max cargo (775). We both had 30% speed boost, the 10% oxford skill speed boost, and R10 Sail Handling. And for testing purposes, neither of us used an aide ship. Only ship equipment we used was 4 Mizzen Top Royal Sails on both ships. And both were stacked with the same exact food and water aboard (200 food and 200 water) and same amount of crew (50). No other cargo was used. We both sailed out from Marseilles, turned to the southwest and sailed out to the Atlantic some, and turned back into Lisbon. We both followed a similar path.

What I found was the ship with min cargo had indeed a significantly faster acceleration then the one with max cargo, and was able to zoom out of sight in no time. As I tracked both of our progress, it seemed both of us had the same exact speed. But after looking up under ship information on both ships, the one with max cargo had a slight speed boost of about 2-3%. Even with this, after being 14 days out at sea, the one with min cargo was still able to finish first, with the one with max cargo coming in about 20 seconds later.

So while I guess it depends on the ship type and how much of a cargo difference there is, you do get a small boost of speed when using max cargo [when carrying the same amount of cargo] but it's hardly noticeable and doesn't justify the slow acceleration.

So if I sail with no food or water will my ship be faster/accelerate faster?

@ wes will be faster, but u need spam voc and clear fatigue and be in good status.

Or just have a decent survival skill rank

no survival skill, but I use a veil constantly and a tuna steak a day does wonders for crew health

OK...there's one thing nobody seems to take into account...

When sailing long distance your deceleration speed effects your top speed as well; each time you switch a sea area the sails need to readjust to the wind direction, thus slowing your speed. For a long trip (like from SEA or EA) the acceleration will play a bigger roll than the small gain on top speed.

Furthermore, the % plays a bigger roll as your ship stats increase, so if you test with a higher level ship the outcome will be a much bigger gap.

I myself have sailed a +20% LMS to and from EA on Gama before trying one built -20%. The -20% was noticeably faster. The top speed was about the same, but keeping the top speed was the key.

I hope this helps clear things up a bit more.
