New school sucks

CrimsonbunnyCrimsonbunny Posts: 82Member Beginner
Is it just me or is the new school worse thin the old one exp wise . where are the so called Maritime Quests granting bonus Battle EXP im not seeing them if so because getting only 100 -200 exp per normal quest from there is really bad im only lv 12 so far from doing a ton of quest from the new school.

VS the old school i could have allready been lv 20 battle and done by now it seems like the only real exp quest that the new school has battle wise is br.s.And if the selling point is having u hold 2 brs at once thats really bad way to make new players  hate battle really fast.

Really im not seeing the + side to doing any questing out of the new city over all it seems really bad at least battle wise.Have not tried adv and very little trade to have a idea on them .

I dont think so. The NS univ seems a bit too liberal and sometimes even radical
but I believe this is conscience of the US.

What do I need to get beginner trader final exam ? since she's maritimer. Actually, you will finish first 2 at no time @Sagres while u can take final exam again if you need to grind skills or get ships for fusions.

There's plenty of quests for new players to do in Sagres to help gain EXP in any field. Besides, it will help ease the false expectations that levels are easy to gain (not so!). It's just something everyone will have to get used to. In anycase, while not prefect and could use adjustments, the new school/tutorial system is a welcome change. Ive heard several players quieting because the school missions were too drawn out and boring. Im hoping that it being shorter and more simplified it will encourage new players to stay.

Why can't there be both?... There should be an option to use the old schools because of the structure.   Or put the old school quests into the Sagres and number them, so a new player can do them in order.  If you want basic training, then do the old school quests.  If you want an accelerated process, then you can skip quests or jump to the final exams.

The argument that the old school quests were too drawn out and boring, is not a good one to make, because if you got bored, you could always stop and do something else and then come back and finish.  Back before the school gave you ships, it was 9 months after I finished Adv and Trade schools, before I got around to finishing off Maritime's Advanced School.

If that cannot happen, then there need to be a guide about how Sagres is supposed to help a new player, for all of us old players.  We need to be able to help the new players (which the game desperately needs).  Currently, the new players are even more frustrated than they would have been bored in the old school system.

I can't apply for the school for some reason. It says they're not accepting new applicants. Is there some kind of issue with this?

Make sure you talked to the receptionist at the school at your home port.   You have to get the Student Title from the receptionist, before you go to school.

    1. After you create toon, talk to GM twice.

    2. Talk to Shipyard Master

    3. Talk to Marketkeeper

    4. Talk to Mediator to take quest calls 1st thing, [Nation] Naval Drill, or First job (depend on which job did you choose)

    5. After you complete quest then report back to Mediator, go outside of GM that will trigger about Rumor of school that should give all Europe permit.

I recommend you to focus on Sagres school 1st while boosts are still on. Apparently, you need 100 fame to take final exam if you don't have account, gunnery, or sail handling. Trading is fastest way to get Graduation Polacca since there are no requirements at all except fame ofc. Adventurer requires consume time to finish school because final exam for advanced school needs r4 adv skills. Oh right, you can get final exam repeat for adventure as long as you have 6 different skills.

Ah, I need to remind you that if you already create toons or already have fame then 5 steps may or will be useless for you. You should visit guard at castle to get all permits. At least, you can get load of fame, rank skills, and level ups if you finish all schools.

Oh, I'd like to thank SSd21 for provided 5 steps.

I like both systems, just wish that the new school would have a set of quests, or even a timer to let me know how many more quests till i can take the final. Thats my only problem with it. I like everything else.

I dont understand why this has changed at all. The old OGP system for school was excellent. Took me ages to work out how to find school and when I did, I got confused. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill..

Sagres school is a financial restructuring move. It must cost a fortune to maintain schools in every capital.

We're lucky they didn't switch it to distance learning.

this is a post of a friend that cant post for a raison ????

    [9:32 PM]Ogen:

Reading this i took upon me to make a new character and try the new school system. I took merchant and took Marseille has starting city. The main issue is that you are stuck in a Barca to open 2 port permit to be able to open Sagres port permit. cause i had a friends tow me there and got the message that i can enter Sagres has we dock there.

they need to open the port permit after the 3 starter quest. cause someone that dont know that dont understand how the port permit system work. dont know what they have to do. They cant retake the lecture. They cant ask School chat, cause that school chat only unlock when you you entrer Sagres.

So it took me 5 ish quest in barca to unlock the second port permit. took me around 30 min. And i know what i am doing. i new player with no access to school chat will probably uninstall the game after 15-20 of not knowing what to do.

I think that basic school should have not been touch and unlock Sagres after that.

new school is confusing cuz the button to review pass lecture is hard to find so you dunno where to go if you don't do the pre-school in one-run
Liner is not rly explained too. It's dangerous to sail from northern europe to west europe for new ppl. They don't have caution skill. Still remember I stuck at bay of biscay and I quited UWO for an year.

I read this and i decide to go back and redo the schools. I made a French nation to check it out. In deed you need to open 2 port permit to be able to enter Sagres. with even after the 3 beginning quest is not open the second one. and doing 5 ish quest i lost count cause Barca is just bad on speed. then take the liner to Sagres. an other thing i have notice is that i can't access the lecture. so if you dont remember you have to ask the question on chat.

event when you know what you are doing. it is no fun to get to school. for the rest is is quick to finish. since i did not need to read everything. so less click. But in my opinion a new player will still not read those big chunk of text and click next, And the fact that you can't go back and check it out. I dont like it.

For Venise and Marseille the fact that they can't access Sagres has quick has the other is an issue. And you need more guidance for the first 3 quest. it is pretty simple for people that have a working knowledge of the game.

I am pretty sure if you take someone who have never played this game, and he start too far from Sagres they will quit this game in the first 30 minutes.

Hi guys, I'm not really a noob (played when netmarble was running it, and then when OGP took over), but here's my 2 cents with regard to the new school system that everyone seems to be complaining/defending:

    1. Lack of direction - It make no sense at all for a new player to be told at a school receptionist that they need to register at a school at Sagres when they don't even know where Sagres is. Keep in mind that Sagres is a new town that even old returning players have no idea about, and they would assume that you need to take a liner to get to there. There are only 2 countries which immediately get the port permits to Sagres whereas everyone else must use liners or go explore on their own. Honestly, by the time I figure out I could have just sailed there on my own, I am already >21 total levels, and pretty much ready to say hell to school.

    2. No hand-holding and no helper in the beginning. Unlike normal hack & slash RPG or EVE, the interface is NOT fool-proof. Half of the features available in the game are explained in detail by the school tutorial, but now, there nothing like that. Take for example, how do you outfit and sail your ship or replenish vigor? Where do you get the necessary skills to survive? Can you even get the formal clothes to meet with the NPCs who can train you in those skills? The world is so harsh that few new players, except those die-hard fans, will quit from the mere frustration of it all. And keep in mind that I'm speaking from my own perspective as someone not all that new to the game.

    3. Lack of community support - one thing that old players tend to forget is the help that they had all gotten from the school chat; one that you are immediately a part of when you register with the school. When the schools are operational in all the starting countries, it is possible for noobs to ask everything that they need from the school chat, even if the explanations are not clear in the tutorial. Now, you have to register for school in a designated place that is nearly 6-12 days away from your starting barca. That's what I call a noob-killing move.

If papaya truly desires to attract and keep new players coming, they must consider all of the points I highlighted, and at least come up with a solution to mitigate the problems faced by them

I just started the game a few days before the update, so I have characters in both schools. In fact, I made new ones just to get the updated new player experience.

Having been through both, and without any sentimental attachment to either, I think I prefer the old system. There things I like about the new school are mostly convenience related, ie cheap food, compact layout, in the 'middle of the world' for newbs.

By far though, the BIGGEST FLAW with the new school is...

no school chat when you start. In fact, you have no chat at all.

I have no idea if new players used to get frustrated and quit the old system, but I seriously considered it. I'm afraid the devs really failed on that one. Imagine the true brand new player who gets dropped into this new world with no idea what to do. I had played a couple characters up to intermediate school before the change. I made 2 characters since the the update. The initial quest line to guide you to school was not obvious or clear at all. I tried it twice, and couldn't figure out how to get the game to send me to school. I knew from my older characters that eventually I would get a dialogue as I left part, but I couldn't trigger it. Finally I talked to the ship master and the quest advanced.

And all this time, no way to ask for help.
We will never know how many others quit because they are lost and can't ask for help.

No longer can I recommend that newbies go to school.

I tried Sagres out with a new alt. I didn't go immediately. I started as a trade learner and I got around 11 trade levels before I took the trip from Amsterdam.

When I arrived, the only thing the merchant instructor had to offer me was the beginner final exam. Finishing that, the next quest was the intermediate final exam. Finishing that...You guessed it - The advanced final exam. No lectures at all.

Since my battle level was zero, I tried out the maritime instructor's offerings. It was a choice of ballistics, accuracy, or melee fights, but no explanation of what any of these were.

My adventure level was around 6. All The adventure instructor had to offer me was a communication with port quest.

Not only does school no longer offer good early fame, XP and ducats, but it doesn't offer learning anymore either.

My recommendation is to put at least the beginner schools back in the national capitols. Use Sagres for intermediate and advanced.

Sorry, but I just have to post another complain about how bad the current system in Sagres truly is. Those of us who know about the old school would understand the flaws of it, and I too, would agree with them strongly. BUT, for all it's flaws, it is there, and most importantly, it gives newbies and new/returning players basic tools to survive - buckets, brush, candle, the 1st R1 cooking recipe if you are doing trade - AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: all 3 types of job change cards for the 3 different guilds in the game.

I can't emphasize enough how important having different job cards at the start of the game is. Everyone knows that to survive at all in this game, you need various different skills from different professions. The professions themselves are passports to getting skills that you normally have to satisfy certain criteria to obtain. But that's still not the main issue here.

In order to change your basic profession to a different one, you need to perform a quest for the specific guild you are job changing to. i.e. to change job to a trade one, you would need to do a special quest for the merchant guild, ditto for adventure and marine jobs. Now, in order to obtain those quests, you need to have the specialized skill of each of the class types: for trade, it's accounting R1, for adventure, it's sail-handling R1, and for marine, it's gunnery R1. Each of this skill is granted to the player at the beginning when s/he chooses the profession (after being promised that s/he can change profession afterwards). By the way, these 3 skills: accounting, sail-handling and gunnery, cannot be learnt anywhere except from the GM of the guild, if you have the skill favored by that profession.

Are you people seeing what's wrong now? Well, let me explain in clearer terms: IN ORDER TO GET A NEW PROFESSION IN ANOTHER CLASS, YOU MUST FIRST HAVE A SKILL THAT BELONGS TO THE CLASS THAT YOU WANT TO CHANGE INTO.

Mind-boggling, huh? Wait, it gets better from here -

We are told at the beginning of the game that we can change jobs whenever we want, after satisfying certain requirements. Now, this WAS technically true in the days of the old school, when they gave us all 3 job cards so that we can at least obtain all 3 essential skills that would allow us to satisfy the requirements for the basic job-change quests later on. AFTER the old school's gone, however, we can NO LONGER get the quest to change jobs, without finishing the profession exams in Sagres.

Some of you will begin to say: "So what, it's just doing the basics, quit whining already." - Now, let me ask you these: what did you hate about the old school in the first place? The way they forced you to go through all sorts of explanation and detail just to reward you a peanut? Right - at the moment, they are not forcing us to go through anything in Sagres at all... unless you want to change to another job.

Wow. In the past, it's not essential to attend school if it's such a distasteful experience. Now, however, it's an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to attend a NON-EXISTENT school in order to play the game. I'm surprised that the player-base is completely fine with it. But no, I guess not everyone had tried starting a new character from scratch just to experience all those things a new player would have to experience. Oh, and no new players ever complained about that, right? Of course not - They don't even KNOW ABOUT A CHANNEL TO COMPLAIN TO. Way to go, Papaya... I guess we would be seeing UWO change hands again soon.

You dont need to have a skill to get a job - just the job card.

Basic job card quests you can get at any guild and those quests are not hard.
Trade: deliver 200 of something in limited time.
Adv. sail to other port in limited time
Battle: kill some low level fleet
  • carlalexcarlalex Posts: 187Member Trainee
Most jobs also require that you have a certain level in adv, trade or battle, but thats usually not relevant for basic jobs.

Reading the comments about the new school system has made me feel discouraged to play this game again.  It seems like instead of taking a step forward, the developers are taking two steps back with the "Sagres" system.  It would've made more sense if the basic schools were kept in the home ports and revamped so that players would have the ships, xp, and fame necessary to sail to Sagres.  And why the school chat was turned off in the new update is beyond my comprehension.

The game needs to attract new players, even if this is an older game.  But making the tutorial school system unnecessarily confusing and frustrating is not going to help with bringing new players into the game,

So how can I sail to Sagres by myself from London?
  • SamuraisonSamuraison Posts: 0Member Beginner
I just restarted playing again. I played on old server for a short time. Maybe got thru all the intermediate school quests and then got sucked into EVE online again. I started again shortly after the move, but having to redo school again so soon made me bored. For me it was mostly all the damn walking around and clunky clicking required to get past it that I hated. The ship rewards for completing school was what I liked.

I quit again for 10 months. Coming back I find myself in an exp bonus and still enrolled in old school.

WHICH I COULDNT BE HAPPIER ABOUT

I do NOT want to have one centralized learning city. Part of the charm is getting to pretend you are actually a seafarer from a certain country. I picked England because I intend on raiding Spanish gold ships in the Caribbean someday as a privateer to Her Majesty. Force me into Spain to be able to progress RUINS my immersion immediately and I want to quit again.

The exp bonus has also been highly motivating. I’m progressing so much better than my first time going through school. The pace feels good. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t want the bonus to continue on forever. I think once you get lvl 20 in a specialty the bonuses should stop. This gives the new player the ability to take part in every aspect of the game and get a better understanding of how they want to play the game.

There are too many items you give as challenge rewards and not enough storage. I’m having to not accept rewards because I don’t have the room. Does a subscription open more space? Can I buy more space? I have NO idea how to improve my storage.

While I’m super happy that I get to have my 3 job cards and was able to acquire a full 27 skill set I still don’t understand how moving back and forth between jobs affects my skills. I went fisherman to mercenary and lost level 5 fishing. No idea why. All in all I’m enjoying myself more this time around and it’s mostly because of the exp boost.

It sure as hell isnt because of your chat setup. I got lucky enough to find a discord server on a uwo you tuber channel that had a crew of players willing to answer my questions. The average noob is gonna quit because he can’t talk to anyone more than anything else if you ask me.
