It's a trade off...you no longer can add a free mod, but you also don't need to mod to add skills.
The change is OK by me.
Yea, I like custom sb better since school ships start with 0/2 while I can reset skills if I don't like without have to use SSIR. Beside you need only r1 sbing to add ship skills without using SSIPs anyway.
1. I recommend you to do school while boosts are still on till lv30 or so.
2. You should get Mineral Trading, Chandler, and Medicine Trading so that you will get all skills from Mineral Trading/Chandler then Handicrafts from Medicine Trading. Sbers will need Sbing, Casting, and HC to make FS ship parts as well as cannons/other ship parts. Btw, I'd say you should let your 2nd toon to take care of sewing because you will have problem with inventory, storage, and vault since you need to buy books for Casting, HC, and Sewing. But you need to grind casting to r5 so that u can make Firebombs then buy Cannons at Seville or Barcelona if u're Spanish.
3. Since ships aren't based on sbing rank anymore and sbing has new formula like I mentioned above, I recommend you to get Arms Dealer job quest asap since it's easiest to get sbing than Shipwright/Tactician or Guardian because requirements are not terrible hard to get. You need to be at 0/28/16 and must have 5k battle fame ,so 5k battle fame is not hard which u can thank to Boosts for that if u take all final exams for maritime at Sagres.
4. You also need collection for materials especially making firebombs. Black Muds can be found at Jaffa outskirt by collecting since Black Muds need r1 anyway then buy Oil at Jaffa then Gunpowder at Barcelona or Alexandria. All of them are non-flammable.
Books
Shipwright Basic for Casting and Handicrafts @Barcelona, Antwerp, Porto, Genoa, etc.
Firearms @ Ceuta and Barcelona- This is the best book for making cannons or some ship parts and good for trading especially Muskets.
Weapon Manufactured Tech @Groningen or Barcelona. Also, u can buy one at Kaffa if you have Chrono title 15.5 to 16.2.
18 guns book at Manchester or any Nation factories. I think u need to invest 2.5m to get that book.
Casting- Fine Protective Gears at Genoa or Lubeck
Alloy Smelting @ Dublin needs to invest 300k
Metal Smelting @ Lubeck
Metallurgy of Precious Metals @Natal or Sofala needs to invest 1.5m or buy one at Seville if u have 16.2 Chrono title.
Nation starters and Calicut has some books for cannons
As for FS Ship Parts, most of recipes are @certain places that Townsman has. I used Ivyro to find out where to make them.
It's worth noting that during the current SB bonus, proficiency gains are multiplied several times over at low skill ranks (as much as +400%) and ships can be sold back to the Shipyard Master for a small profit, so make the most of it while you still can! I'm building Vaisseau's from SB R1 and ranking up fairly fast without losing any money
So... before Order of the Prince I took a break from the game. When I came back to it, I didn't realize there had been these changes to shipbuilding proficiency, so I was using the old method...for about a month. Thankfully I came upon a blog yesterday that set me straight a bit, and then this one. After doing some testing on my own (and using the formula which was posted here, which I tested and proved), I was able to put together a more comprehensive look at what to grind.
Before, because total levels of a ship far outweighed the time factor, finding a ship with high levels and low build times was advantageous. Some ships cost more, so we traded price for speed (XP/time). Now, because ship levels don't matter, the only other variables between ships are price and build time. Proficiency is now static compared to build time (at a given SB rank), so ALL ships give approximately the same XP/time ratio.
That said, there are 2 main considerations: The first, obviously, is to look for the lowest price/days ratio. That is, if there are 2 ships that take 10 days each to build, the best one is the cheapest one. The next consideration is turnover rate. That is, how often do you have to run back and forth to the shipyard (including docking, means 2 screen changes in each direction). The ships that take longer to build mean less frequent trips, which saves time. But not a lot, usually. The other thing to remember is this: The Oxford skill cuts build times in half, but it also rounds DOWN on odd numbered build times (11 becomes 5). With the old way, Oxford did NOT noticeably affect proficiency (if at all). With this new method, it will cut proficiency in half (or worse), for the same ducat cost. So do NOT run the Oxford skill while grinding.
So, cost per proficiency, Barcas are actually the best. However, the turnover rate is so high, you'll spend near as much time INside as OUTside, greatly increasing the time to rank up.
Lastly, the old formula DIVIDED by your current rank, meaning you earned LESS proficiency as you ranked up, hence the need to be able to reach to a BETTER ship (the dhow, the cutter, the schooner, the Sambuk, the Turkish Galley) to be able to earn a better proficiency rate.
Now, because all ships can be made at rank 1, and because your current rank is MULTIPLIED, the need to change up ships is GONE. You can stick with your preferred grind ship throughout the entire process!
So, all of that said...and factoring in 1 minute trip to start new build...to get from r10 to r11 (for example)
ShipBuildXPprice of shipships neededtotal losstotal hours

At first I was doing frigates, as that seemed more cost effective than Vaisseaus or Venetian Galleasses (it was), but now I'm grinding with Small Caravels. 8 minutes is not a bad turnover time, and I'll lose 1/5 the ducats and only spend another 2 hours for the rank. Frigates are still a good choice as well, if you need a longer turnover time. Anything longer is a waste of ducats.
