I was wondering just how gunnery skill gains proff because i was doing a br from London im lv 17 in battle and 2nd school ship using 3 rf 8s and im gaining no skill proff now what so ever im at r3+2.

Can u not gain proff  on lower ships or something its been a long time from the last time i played and did battle at all so im fuzzy when it comes to this.

Im a little lost on why i stopped getting any proff i dont remember gunnery skill getting blocked like this in the past.Like i said its been a  long time so any insight on this would be a huge help for me to better understand

As you level up you will get less xp when engaging a low level ship - eventually getting to 0 xp.

So try to engage higher level NPC ships.

Yes - as your skill grows you need to do harder tasks to get skill xp.

    Hi Crimsonbunny,

Don't mix up proficiency levelling with experience levelling. Gunnery (and accuracy, ballistics, and reloading) all gain proficiency when your cannons make contact successfully with the other ship.* Therefore, using rapidfires is generally a good idea if you want to concentrate on grinding up those skills - although rapidfires tend to wear out more quickly as your BR level increases.

Keep in mind that it takes longer to get to the next proficiency level (and experience level) the higher up you go. (Boosters are helpful.)

As you rank up in maritime, you are somewhat forced to do higher level Battle Reports to get decent experience. As soon as you are able to handle your next stage of the Battle Report, you should do so. As your maritime level increases, the fleets you sink will yield you less and less experience. (In fact, I think there was a nerf because I am levelling a future pirate character and the experience I am getting sinking fleets is definitely less than I received with my bounty hunter).

With level 3 BRs and higher, you have more fleets with three of four ships; sinking these yields more experience when you sink all three/four.

Also keep in mind that you need the appropriate number of crew to do maximum cannon damage (minimum sailors for ship + [7/8 x # of cannons] + 1).

    Hope this helps.

*Penetration is different. Penetration ranks up based on the amount of damage done.
