Do i need to do the school?

So i just started the game and so far i am loving it. However after a couple days messing around and generally doing stuff on my own i learned that going back and doing some type of school thing would give me more trade fame. Long story short i found my way to Sagras by earning enough trade fame from quests and earning the new port permit solo, and sailed there by hand because taking the liners would have cost me 50k where as sailing there myself only cost me about 15k.

Turns out however because i need to finish some kind of quest back in Amsterdam i cant enroll in the school and that means blowing the last of my cash going home. So my question is seeing as i have so far been managing just fine on my own and i already unlocked the next port permit by the time i got here is it even worth it to try and save up again for another sail all the way back down here? Or should i invest in something else like a new ship (i have been sailing around in a trading barca this entire time)?

    School is optional.

But you do get nice things like better ships as a reward from the quests there. (9 ships - one from each of the 9 final exams)

The exp is also very good in the school quests so you level faster.

But also consider joining a company. A company mate could tow you from Amsterdam to Sagres in minutes. And they will help you in other ways too.

There's nothing the game will keep you from doing if you don't finish the schools, yet there are benefits to doing the school when it's more convenient for you (especially the free boats.) Eventually what you're doing will take you close to Sagres, and that might be the time to enroll so as you continue sailing you can do school quests as part of whatever else you're doing.

Many players (including me) did the schools as more of a secondary objective and some never did finish all 3 courses. I had the school sprout on my flag for several months until I finally got around to finishing the maritime school. It didn't effect anything, except I didn't have the school frigate. As a non-maritime player, not having it made no difference.

As a new player at the beginning of this month I have sort of nibbled at the school quests. I completed the Merchant school to get the free Merchant ships, but I have also just finished Adventure school and have finished the intermediate Maritime school. But I have also started research at Oxford, joined a company and done trips to te Company Colony and done loads of sailing around Northern Europe and the Med.

Making money has not been a problem, in fact I'e just completed a research project to make 10 single trades each netting 100k profit, which was a challenge, but has only taken me a couple of days.

I have really enjoyed playing. The community have been very helpful. I think that the best way is not to try and rush things, consider your options and remember that the game presents options and does not force you to do anything that is not suitable to your play style. For instance, I got offered a National Event, but I have reached a point where I don't wish to continue, so I have left it and moved to do something else.

Basically, play to your own style as long as it respects other players.

@Dwalefoot, really happy you're enjoying the game. Looking at the Steam reviews most of them are downvotes because of the graphics :(
