Haven't played this game in a while but I've been here since netmarble days. Is it worth it to come back and try this game out again? How's the population?
Havent seen that name in years hope all is well. Well to answer you question since you havent been here since NM days you have go through the time line.
Population during NM...
Introduction of bugged forged tools lost about 1/3 population
Moved to OGP- remained the same
Deck battle introduced- lost about an 1/4 population
Forged cannons removed- gained 1/4 back
Piracy Nerfs - lost 1/3 population
Coolwind banning spree - lost 1/5 population
Coolwind fired - gained about 1/5 back
Moved to papaya - lost 1/3 of the population
Good decisions no long term bad scandals by Papaya and some piracy nerfs rolled back - gained 1/4 back
Game added to Steam - gained 1/5
So judging by the timeline the population is about 55% of what it was on Netmarble...its been quite a journey many things have changed and tons of new content so if you want to see all the new features go for it...if you played this game solely for tons of people its alot less so you might be disappointed...
Another element now is that papaya has been making all the top gear, items and ships more commonly available in ticket/cove/events so it's dropped the price to get these items in game dramatically. I like this idea cause it makes everything more affordable to newer players and brings balance to the game. If everyone has access to all the same gear and ships then it really does come down to player skill.
It is still a great game, but Papaya definitely needs to do some advertising to help reinvigorate the user base.
Some of us simply love the game and will play forever, but it is really nice when we see new players joining in.
To Papaya's credit they have added a number of new discovery alternatives, and some high profit trading alternatives, as well as maritime features. They have shortened the school system, but is now more confusing to newbies who have no background, so now newbies come out of school with less knowledge than before, some get discouraged, and some leave.
There is still tons of grinding to gain levels. That could be improved, and Papaya has run "boost" periods which help the process, but maybe more could be done there as well.
Overall, if you liked it before, you will like it again.
Papaya did better job than OGP ,but they will need to come up with events which OGP was able to do so. Tbh, it's nowhere near OGP's early days or NM when comes to population. Koei does need to fix something ie awful dungeon, immigrant screwed up colony trade goods, bazaar/co. shop ie limit amount for items, etc.
As for Sagres school, one player uploaded youtube video for school tutorial to help newbies to start game.
I've tried jumping back in a few times since the wipe that Papaya did, and I just can't bring myself to go through the grind. Not only the level/skill grind but the lotto box grind as well.
@masonweaver actually, with all the buffs and events that Papaya has had many people have surpassed where they were back on OGP in only the past year. I know certain grinds are hard to deal with but if you find the game fun then you might find you can get back to where you were in very little time. :)
