Asking about a name.

Hey all!

Whilst UWO is downloading, I decided to brainstorm an idea in my head for my character. For those who don't know me (first time poster, so here goes!) I like to RP in my games, especially in a MMO setting.

Since I couldn't find the most appropriate forum to post this question in, I decided to ask here instead. If a GM could get back to me as well in regards to what I'm about to ask that would be also appreciated.

Basically, I want to name my character <Bartolome the Black>. Since he will be of Spanish nationality, and I intend on making the name Spanish...yeah, you can see why that may turn some heads.

I want to make it clear that my use of the term is no way meant to be racist or offensive. Since my character will be black skinned, and given the time period in which this game is set in I genuinely feel this could provide my character development an interesting story.

Going, to be honest with you Swedean...whether you get reprimanded for your name relies solely on players in the game.  Essentially what I mean is if a player or more effectively group of players don't like your name (or you) they can, will and HAVE reported to GM in hopes of trying to get you in trouble.

On OGP I had the name TasteMyJuiceBox it didn't violate any rules but low and behold the haters reported in mass to the GM prompting me to warped into the GM Room jail smh and ordered to change I asked how is it bad they said it's not a violation but it's "suggestive" and I had to change it to CandyApples.  Meanwhile, there were people walking around with names the same time such as AdolfH, BukkakeMan666 and MeinCampf and OsumaBenLauden I saw them play for months with zero issues...

So in summary, if people don't like you or you're well known and they want to knock you down a peg they will report "questionable" names. Just a warning I recommend don't give them ammunition against you.

Guess the issue is that in the US you are not allowed to be offensive and everything is offensive to someone, thus making NOTHING allowed.

There are even schools in the US where mathematics is considered racist,

As far as the word "negro" is concerned, to me its THE standard neutral term in the English language for a person in that category.

he didn't use the word 'negro' for his name he used the word 'black' which more implies colour not race. No different than calling himself "Bartolome the Green" or something like that. However if he is planing on setting up his character is such a way racially, then sure there might more of a racial connection then.
    But as I see it...

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

@CPC "mein kampf" can't be considered offensive. It's German translation for "My Fight", nothing offensive about that since that could be by anyone. Society only connects it with Hitler from a non german perspective. But to germans saying "my fight" could refer to something totally unrelated or to anyone.

    Hehe Wes...

Well, in my opinion there is not a problem at all about the mentioned player name as long as it is seen in the right perspective. Some and perhaps even all names can be linked to a brutal, offensive, sexist or racist perspective at some point.
But in some cases it is clearly intentionally meant to be provocative and then GM's should act.
GM's have the obligation to act when it appears that multiple complaints have been made against a specific player name.

But as for your suggested name there will be no problem at all! I believe the word black is used already in other players's alts in all sorts of perspectives. So just go with it would be my advise.

    Yours
     Flo!
