With proper promotion and exposure, the game can potentially be much more populated than any of you cry babies can imagine. Its essentially a brand new game.
In the current gaming market it just isn't realistic to expect players to invest a real life year to build a character. That's a year with purchased charms and enhancements, several years without. On top of that, you set the precedent of wiping away everyone's progress and items they spent money on.
The FM program is great and sometimes I think they were even able to send someone to help a player in trouble, but they couldn't do it themselves ...maybe if there was a way for people willing to help to know when there's trouble. I loved helping if I could, but not having school chat, there weren't many times...usually it was when players were using /tell or /shout.
With the economy back to normal(?) it will help a lot for new players I think. When you do all the schools, most students aren't rich and I know there were long time players in school chat helping, but also hurting by bragging about their main toons wealth ...very bad for the new player who has a million to hear about fifty billion. I've always thought a big payday for finishing all the schools would help a lot, even with the new economy. At least for awhile there won't be many older players giving ducats away.
Papaya could try to make the game known to older game players...like retired people who love history, or sailing. I know one like that who will play someday, but he has to retire first...he tried game and knew it would take up too much time.
This is probably just my opinion, but I never liked the trailers for the game. I like the way UWO looks, even if it could be better, it doesn't need to be. To watch the trailer makes it look like the game will have way better graphics than it does...so obviously some people will be disappointed when their toon appears for the first time. At least include some of the actual game in the trailers. Besides...if they get older people to play I'm pretty sure they're used to really primitive graphics...so UWO doesn't look so bad to them.
I don't know if all the chat rooms are used either. World, Merchant and sometimes Adventure are, but if any are always empty, make that one a "HELP ME" channel for new players when school players can't help them. I know they can use World chat, but sometimes the conversations there get so weird the person asking for help gets ignored or worse, insulted. Their question might sound dumb, and sometimes they don't know how to ask it in the right way, but they need a place where they will be heard and not demeaned for asking.
Or create a anything goes room and make World chat the HELP chat.
And if Koei could, reduce the grinds of schools even more...I know they cut the number by half, but cut it even more, maybe with advice about the extra fame and experience they can get doing more grind but without requiring it.
Plus lower the levels on the graduation frigate. It's a nice beginner boat, but most players finish all the schools without being able to use it. The frigate would be perfect for the final maritime examine and yes, players can wait and come back later to finish, but there's another problem.
Some games apparently require a person to finish the tutorials or there will be things they won't be able to do in the game. It's not true in UWO, but how many beginners realize that. I helped enough new players to know they thought for sure they had to finish the school to open up everything else...so they were having trouble with the final battle ....they weren't ready and sometimes had a terrible ship to do it with or their ship had lost too much durability to survive.
Oh....unless the low level safety factor is staying in the game...the geo final exam is going to put new players in danger and if that's their highest adventure skill...they don't have the choice about going into hostile waters. The adventure finals are all normal quests too..so why not make the geo final a different location quest.
New players may like the game..but it takes time to really love it....take away as much as possible that makes them rage or feel like their too dumb to master the game.......and yes...I've helped some who felt that way. They have no reason not to quit when the game makes them feel bad.
Now I just have to wonder if my post will even show up......most of mine don't.
