Lug and I are undecided right now, but leaning towards no. The thing is, we spent a lot of time helping others the years we played. That's how Lug and I met, I was a complete newbie, scared of my shadow, and he took me on a dungeon run for some goods to sell. 4 years later, we are together in real life. I share that to show what this game was, and how near and dear to me it is. I don't say I'm leaving just because I'm pissed off, I'm heartbroken. We have heard so much pure nastiness from other posters here that it makes both of us feel like why should we come back? Why do favors for people that call you all kinds of terrible things? Lug and I have talked about this a lot in the last couple days. We'll make up our minds soon enough. We're holding out a little hope that someone at Papaya will listen to reason, honestly though we both know better.
I feel bad for you two. I had a good time in chat when either of you were on there. I usually put in a line or two to back you up during a disagreement. The only time I remember disagreeing with either of you was right after the announcement of the server close. I said I was sure there would be a wipe and both you and Lug were saying that the server was not going to be wiped. Too bad I turned out to be correct. Good luck to both of you, I will miss your wisdom.
Yeah Oberrill, we were very wrong, we forgot logic and reason don't apply to the internet *sigh*. He's looking for another game we can play together, we're playing DDO right now, I am really bad at it, but its fun smashing stuff. We will log in the first week, to see what happens, but after that, idk. If I walk away from UWO with nothing but Lug, then it was 4 years well spent for me, so I think I'll leave it at that. Done posting for now, we'll see what happens in a couple weeks.
If you want to repeat the progress like watching an old movie again and again, do so.
But remember do NOT spend a single cent on this game until you gain the same progress and content. It is not right to pay for the movie again when you watch it the second time.
I want to see how long can the server run in this BS mode.
My IGN was Panagiotis. I'm mates with LeVatiquois and I'm just confirming what he said isn't bollocks. I had a lot of time and effort invested in this over the past few years, some had way more time and money invested...either way I'm totally done and I'm not even logging in. What's the point? Trinkets? To hell with this. I just lost a lot of really good mates in my company cos they're not coming back either and I can't blame them. Stupid move to wipe but have it your way. Rip me once shame on you, if I'm stupid enough to come ask for seconds, shame on me. Shan't see me again.
We should look at Dekaron and their other current games for at least some insight on how PapayaPlay operates with them. Seems all of their other games are complaining about a lot of P2W material.
Looks like we might be entering another money milker. Really hope they don't change too much of the UWO system like preventing people from obtaining some items that were previously attainable with OGP/NM. Doesn't look like they connect with communicate well by looking at the other gaming communities. I wouldn't be surprised if they start throwing free trials and memberships on top of microtransactions. I will be hoping for the best and that they don't ruin the game.
@Vatiquois - thank you for all in UWO - and all the best for you wherever you go. I can understand you and others all too well. I am just not yet decided (only that i wont pay any real money for UWO for a very long time)
Some said here that the server wipe was not Papaya's but KOEI's decision. If I was Papaya in such a case I would make a pretty clear announcement so the players are aware why the server was wiped and that they could not help it.
The server wipe is really a very bad way to start - alienating the player community and making sure that people will hesitate to spend real money for the game.
I wouldnt be surprised if they launch with an insane cash store chest giving away ships and such to take all your money.. alot will boycott it.. some will give in.. then they will reset in 6 months to do it again. Cheers.
My neighborhood has interesting theory about reset ,so he believes Papaya had to reset it because UWO already reached peak that Papaya won't able to make money. He said the players tend to be lazy and entitled because they refuse to move on and will not willing to make game better. In reality, there is no way that Papaya can profit while UWO reaches peak whereas not many players will spend on cash shop because they already have everything they need.
The bottom line is that profit will achieve Papaya's goal since they will have to pay royalty to KOEI while they make money to pay their employees. They couldn't careless if the players decide to quit because of that ,so they're willing to gamble on reset.
That wouldn't surprise me if it were true. But considering we weren't that far away from an update which would've given us infinite shipbuilding options, something that would've motivated players old and new alike to build the perfect ship, and as the infinite shipbuilding process came with built-in cash items as part of it, that would only show again how little Papaya knew the game they were inheriting.
And when you offend the greater part of your customer base who helped run the program for you and took care of training new players to do the same, it becomes less of a gamble, and more of a folly.
Yep. It's business. Hopefully they don't start throwing in more P2W content than we have ever had before. I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow buffed exp across the board and the pace of the game so that it's less of a grind than it has been the past 7+ years as a way to try to keep more players/appeal to the new generation of gamers, since this game requires patience. This would mean that there's a chance the grind starting from scratch to rebuild everything might not be as crazy as what people went through when GAMA started. Hopefully we get more details soon on what to expect.
I think Dekaron had a server maintenance, other than that, I do not know.
I agree even more with that theory. Going by the Founder Rewards: Either they only have access to our character levels or they are capable of not resetting the world.
Even if they only had access to our levels, that would be something they could recover. If those levels are connected to character data, in turn connected to user login, and for the founder rewards to be given to the highest level character on an existing account they should be, then those could be recovered too. And if that is possible, then that opens the door of possibly recovering any lost inventories or skill ranks that were documented, as I suggested was possible in two separate forum posts. Just because it's possible doesn't mean Papaya will agree to it, but do we lose anything in asking them politely about it?
Hopefully some people will stick around because I can't imagine where Papaya is going to get new players from. Some who play their other games might try UWO, but that's not very promising for profits. The only time I recall UWO getting a flood of new players was when they added Steam, and that won't work now. For those of who have played 7 years, one of NM GMs once posted a sad fact about UWO (probably wasn't supposed to) - that 50% of new players quit in the first 2 weeks of play. That was back before all the fancy astro stuff and FS builds - an indication that top level players with their wealth are probably not the reason new people quit.
I am quitting mostly because of the wipe. There's a lot of stuff they could take from me and I wouldn't care, but after my first 2 years I achieved my goals and only continued playing because I found adventure was not only fun, but educational. I have a favorites folder UWO and it has UWO info sites plus many others, like an animal data base for researching things I learned playing the game. Sure, they sometimes messed with historical facts, but not in mind numbing ways. That is why I can't start over. Adventuring is the only reason I was playing anymore and doing all the quests/maps again isn't about learning, it's just going through the motions. Time is too important to spend it repeating what has already been done before.
But I was close to quitting before the wipe, so like always, I don't count. I don't know why, but Industrial Age made the game feel different. Other things like the canals, long schooners and such were a stretch, but with the recent patch it no longer seemed like UWO was a game about The Age of Sail and so many of the recent patches didn't add anything interesting - gold digging is mostly a bust and the future gem mining probably will be too. What really bothered me was the adventure discoveries were far less interesting or mysterious - my saved websites weren't being used much anymore.
So I'm not going to criticize those who stay or those who, like me, are going to leave. Certainly money spent should be an issue for many, but it's not just the money, it's the years of in game items we've now lost and the work put into our characters. I adventured when you could still get lost in a big landing site for an hour - my toon earned most of the levels the hard way and she doesn't care if it's easier now.
It's also about Koei/NM/OGP ruining/damaging/breaking the game and instead of being creative to get things closer to where they want it to be, they punish the proven, loyal players. I wasn't super rich in ducats and sailed shipyard boats. I also didn't let the ducat wealth or super ships of others bother me. Papaya has decided to take everything and none of it is real, so they get away with it. Imagine a company pulling that on their loyal customers in real life matters involving either hard work or money spent - it's a poor business practice, but in gaming it seems to work okay (UWO is the only online game I play, so that's a guess.)
One thing I don't believe is that Koei is behind the wipe - if they have any guilt it's probably in agreeing to allow it. Papaya has done this to other games, so it was probably them requiring it to host the UWO. I'm not positive about that though - around where I live Koei is an unknown entity. I say Koei to anyone and they either give me a blank stare or think I'm talking about goldfish. I like Koei games but I'm not sure they're that good at marketing their products (maybe in other locations they are?)
I hope enough people stay to keep the game going. Of the four people I convinced to play, I was the only one left - the others liked it, but felt it was too time consuming to continue. I will be one of those who logs in on the 18th, then after I have a good cry, I will be gone too.
I wrote too much, but that's cause Papaya didn't post my other 6 attempts and maybe this one won't work either - probably doesn't matter much. I was mostly invisible in the game too (not private mode, just invisible.)

lol it is my server , ive lost my stuff 2 x on this game alone with restarts...1st time i was max sber pirate had blast lost during netmarble takeover because i didnt have access to my email acct . and now i have a 7 nation r 20 sber 3 toon fleet of nanban ships making me 350 - 400m a run ...im losing just as you are trust me , but i welcome it for the change back to old ways .... a pirate shouldnt have to run a trade fleet to pay his way .... i say thx you papaya your what we needed , just wasnt what ppl wanted :D
SenileFrenchGeezer here. Mamacat, I was not going to comment, I was just going to quit and fade into the French sunset. I loved and cherished you, mamacat (don't keel me Lug: I am French, and can't help it, I am also quite harmless, and glad mamacat is happy now). You made me so ashamed of myself, mamacat; I have been playing for years, had 2 nice warships, adventured as a Priest, and had all adventure skills and haul and salvage. Had a nice aide named Shirin(?), whom I got out of her burka (put a French Petticoat on her), who had haul and salvage. All that and I claim 6 discoveries and 4 ship wrecks to my name. I had 5 farms with Resin, and helped make suede and +2 farm tools. I usually helped with handicrafts and cooking. I was originally named SenileOldGeezer, which is my name on several other games, but after seeing how much the French were hated, I started over and replaced "Old" with "French". I was a joke toon, not to be taken seriously. I was too 'senile" to understand when I was being insulted.
Then I saw you, and spoke with you, and saw how much of an adventure whirlwind you were, and I had decided to stop being a joke toon, and I even bought expanded Captain's Bag, to store all my maps. All the other toons fed me SWMPs; I had 999 on my toon, and 999 on another toon. Then . . . this happens . . .
So I want you to know, mamacat, that you may not know how many lives you have touched. You certainly touched mine, and I believe my real-life prayers helped you. I do not know who you are, but God does. Out of losing all my skills, levels, ducats, and possessions, losing you will be my greatest loss.
Much respect to you and Lug

Been playing the game since India was opened - if my account is wiped out... I will not waste another 10 years on this s*****... Sorry... I'm very sad.... Stupid idea this wipe....

they have NO IDEA that years of work, and ship building cannot be replaced
