Failure adding gem to socket

I have an armor with one socket. I tried simply adding a gem (Pyramid 57) by simply adding the gem to the armor and then clicking on it. It did not do anything, no gem was added.

Am I doing something wrong here or is there a technical problem with the game? Is there a specific method of adding a gem to an already socketed item?

Turns out I did not have my facts straight regarding the gems. I was trying to add a weapon-specific gem to the armor.

The fault is entirely mine.
